I have a 1957 720 gas. It sits on brand new 15.5-38 rubber. I think that it might be kinda rare. I havent seen many 720 gas tractors that weren't the wheatland models. The serial number is 7211094.It has a narrow front with roll-a-matic and power steering that you can turn with your index finger. The engine was rebuilt by a JD mechanic about 10 years ago. He told me that he bored it .045 and put new aluminum pistons in with main bearings, and it only a year ago had the head redone to restore compression. The three point system has been completely gone through and rebuilt. It is in original condition as far as the paint.I have a complete set of front JD front weights. Ive heard that they are very valuable. I also have the original hyd cylinder that came with the tractor from the dealer and a set of (aftermarket I think) duals also. I purshased it at a sale from a man that was the first and pretty much only person to use it from the time he bought it new. I believe it to be the most mechanically sound 720 that I have seen. It will idle at around 400rpm's. There's nothing sweeter than being able to cound the strokes!! But, I'm wondering is I got a good deal or not. (Im not going to say how much i gave for it.) If someone could just give me a value for it. Thanks

Where I live on the Ohio Vally I'd have to spend about 5,000 for it. What it is actually worth as a farm tractor can only be dicided by you. Greg H.

You can add up the value pretty fast. A good 3point is $1000 to $1200; front weights are $450. to $650; new 15.5 tires are +/- $550. The 720 gas row crop was pretty common in the midwest. I would think in this area with the xtras it would bring $4500 to $5500.

I think there a little high for a gas.You can
buy nice diesels for around $4000.A gas usually
sells for around 3500 to 4500 restored.

As an old Hoosier, I would agree with Frank, the Buckeye. A wide front, especially a standard tractor, was indeed rare in that part of the country.

Here are some production numbers on the 720s:

RC Gas - 4917; RC Diesel/Pony - 11875; RC Diesel/Elec - 2055.

Standard Gas - 520; Standard Diesel/Pony - 3445; Standard Diesel/Elec - 133.

I couldn't assess the value of yours, either, but there are the numbers - maybe they'll help you decide if you got a good deal or not.

I have seen three points for sale on this website for $700 so with a narrow front end I would say about $3000 or that is what I would give. By the way does anyone know where I could find an 11.2 x34 tire for the rear of my 40? or i will sell the 40 for $1000. ph. 251-578-2021.

Stan:

Remember when the tractor jockeys would go out west to Missouri and Kansas and bring those funny looking Massey's/MM's/660's and 4010's back, all with big fenders and no 3pt/PTO ?

I thought they were from the moon !

Tyler B:

I can't hazard a guess on value, but take it from an old Buckeye, we thought the wheatlands were rare! I know there were a great many tri-cycle, row-crop 720's on Ohio farms, but at the time of that model, diesel was rapidly gaining in popularity, so there might have been fewer gassers, but not sure.

I remember that we always pointed out a tractor with a WFE, because it was "different" !

Times change don't they.

Frank
