leaky carb float bowl gasket

I have a 620 john deere. The gasket between the float bowl and the carb is leaking. I bought a new one, but it too is leaking. It is a flimsy cork gasket, and it isn't very wide. I am having a hard time getting it lined up just right on the float bowl. Does anyone have any suggestions for keeping it in place while I tighten up the bowl nut? It slides over just a little bit, then gas leaks out the side. Should I use some kind of gasket silicone or something? Thanks for your help. Andrew R.

Andrew, I have a mcculloch chainsaw with the gas tank that comes in two halves with a cork gasket in between. I used to much of the #2 permatex if that is the one that stays soft and doesn't dry hard and all the gasket stuff that squeezed out on the inside gas tank disolved from the gas. One mentioned using a little of the #2. Just wipe it on and if any squeezes out you put to much on. The directions calls to let it dry a bit so it becomes tacky. Dave

like one of the previous post I always take a hammer handle and set the bowl on flat surface and tap the center down. You after this you may be able to put both a gasket on the inside and outside. I always use a light amount of the black(like indian head) sealer from John Deere. Never have any problems with sealing off.

Andrew, on those type problems Ive had some luck using Permatex No. 2 very lightly just enough to stick things and let it dry and adhere before tryign to assemble. Ive also used some of the red aircraft type gasket sealant, I forget the make or brand however. Silicone is slick and may work in some places as a form a gasket material, but I prefer Permatex or other sealants where Im tryign to stick somethign together. John T

Andrew, DON'T use silicone, that stuff is the kiss of death around carb jets & you don't want to pull that carb apart..

~It sounds like that gasket came from Deere?.. The carb gaskets from Deere aren't what they used to be. The best carb gaskets come from Roberts Carb.. If you want to try to use that gasket you might try soaking it in hot water for a while, then install it [that might make it swell up a little].. If you want to seal it, use some Loc-Tite PST pipe sealer on both sides of the gasket.. The bowl will come off later if you need & it is gasoline & alcohol proof.

~One more word of CAUTION: DON'T tighten that bowl nut up real tight or you will be sending that carb out for an expensive stem thread repair..

Andrew, your bowl may be bent upwards, and you may need to push it back, I have used 2 gaskets before, but try bending it back just a VERY LITTLE FIRST. Dave N.E.Iowa
