49 A (gas) question

Tractor runs OK, but not right. Backfires frequently, can't seem to adjust the mixture on the carb and tractor smokes. Timing seems to be right, doesn't make much difference advancing or retarding by turning the mag. The carb stem has been broken before I bought it and brazed back on. It seems that there is no adjustment on the idle needle. Have cleaned the carb and cleaned all(?) the air passages and ports. Now my question, what should I check/try next? Is it perhaps a bad carb that needs replaced? I know it is not an air obstruction problem, even taking the air cleaner bowl off it still acts up. Ideas, thoughts?

Thanks

For what it's worth, my 50 had basically the same problem. It backfired and didn't want to rev out unless done slowly and under no load. Carb was cleaned (twice)adjustments turned every which way, and new points/condensor installed. Ended up taking the sediment bowl assembly off and removed the screen above the glass bowl only to find MAJOR corrosion which was preventing adequate fuel flow. So often we assume sediment bowls aren't the problem but there are screens/filters that can clog and aren't visible until removed. It may even appear that the tractor has good flow but it's hard to say what's happening when the tractor is opened up and requires more fuel flow. This may not be your problem but is worth a look! Good luck.

I had that problem after completly re-doing a 41A.
I somehow forgot to re-install a plug in the carberator. It is the small one inside of the flote chamber on the side of the stem. Good luck.

Does your 49 A have the 'semi-automatic' choke? It is a torsional spring, wrapped around the choke shaft, inside a little cup on the end of the choke shaft. There are 2 pins that actuate the choke - if the pins get crossed, the choke will stay about 1/2 closed. My 51 has this - when the pins wore out, the symptoms were similar to yours. I did the things that you have done - I found it when I disconnected the intake pipe to test the tractor w/o the air cleaner.

Yes, it does have to spring loaded choke. I'll give that a look, and also look again for a missing plug. Other than that all the passages were cleaned. Bushings good, needle is good (But don't know condition of the seat its right where the stem was brazed together. I was hoping for some simple head-slapping, "Why didn't I think of that!" ideas to try. Appreciate the thoughts.

Seems to me your carburator is running too rich. Usually the problems can be fixed without replacing the whole thing. I presume you cleaned out all the passageways - see Link and look at the diagraham. Is the idle needle valve ok. Often, no adjustment capability means the needle / seat has been deformed, and you need a new needle. Did you pull out the brass mixture tube and clean it? Is the downstream gasket ok? How about the bushings around the choke and throttle shaft?

Sir-before you spend a lot of money, you might contact Link's carb repair, or Roberts carb repair. I had a couple done by Links, and they really work well. Plan on $100 or maybe a little more to fix, but it may save you a lot of money for things you don't need to fix. You problem sounds a lot like carb troubles.

For what it's worth, my 48 A acted the same way th e day of a show. Wound up not going with it. Came home and played around with all of the above fixes and was still baffled. One "head slap" later (replaced spark plugs with only 10 hrs. on them) and the problem disappeared. Talk about feeling dumb? Don't over look the ob
