I had a small engine repair man tell me that Stihl made one series odd number for the homeowner and even number for the professional. I still have my dad's David Bradley 71/2 hp with 30 in drawbar. That was a bear to haul around.

I like the Husky, but I run 2 Jonsereds. They are also a Swedish built saw like the Husky (heck, both companies are owned by Electrolux). My dad bought a new Jonsered in 1979 and has used the crap out of it without ANY problems! I looked at a new Stihl a couple of years ago and wasn;t all that impressed. Most of them now are made in the US, not Germany. Same with some of the smaller Jonsered & Husky's. You'll be able to tell the difference by the price. The US built saws run around $250-300, and the Swedish builts run $450 on up. The Swedish builts are hand assembled and seen to have a better track record.

Steve, Have to tell you I am a big fan of Husqvarna saws, bought one new in 1985 , a 61, and it still goes like it did on the first day. Some models however were sold as "professional" saws, and give more power at higher revs, which suited OK if you were in the habit of pulling them down on a more regular basis. Farmers however seldom practice such preventitive maintainance, and they were unpopular. Buy a saw that the local dealer can give professional back-up for. Theres nothing worse than going back to the shop you buy from for a simple repair only to be told "That part cannot br got anymore, you should trade it in for a new Nippon-Matic XXL" !

Over the years the names have changed. Believe it or not, in the fifties, McCulloch was the leading name. I still have a twenty odd pound relic of that era. Still does great if only these old bones could handle it.

Since then, Homelite, Poulan and others have had their day in the sun. Now, around here, there are two camps-- Husky and Stihl. Both are tougher than most things in this day and age. Me? I'm saving my change to buy a Stihl 036 Pro. Little less costly, litte more user friendly.

Putt Putt, I can remember A Fleetwood saw my dad had in the fifties and early sixties had maybe a 28" bar. Dad said it weighed a ton and was about a half day job just to start it. Traded it to his cousin who was a McColluch dealer at the time for an even bigger Mac and bought a used Mac with a 22" bar to be used for his 'little saw'. By the time I was old enough to use a chain saw, Homelite was coming out with it's XL series. I only got to run that big McColluch saw a couple times before Dad decided he didn't need it any more.HJ

Holy moley Handsome,

You must be getting to be an old timer, just like me!!!!! Your mention of Fleetwood saws really took me back. I havent thought of them in years. My Dad had an old two man Fleetwood--- 4 cycle engine. You pivoted something in he drive line to go from vertical to horizontal. Engine always stayed upright. What a bull it was. Its still in the back of an old shed. I have no desire to dig it out!!

Glad these new saws are lighter and more nimble. Dont know how our Dads handled those old ones all day long.

I'm really sold on Husqvarna. I have one with a 14" bar and one with a 20". My brother inlaw has comparable Stihls. I think my Huskys will perform with them.HJ

Did ya hear about the old Dutchman that went to the JD dealer to buy a new chain saw, the salesman told him that the JD saw was guaranteed to cut 10 cord of wood a day, next day the old Dutchman brought the saw back and said that the best he could cut was 7 cord and he wanted his money back, the salesman couldn't understand it, so he took the saw from the old Dutchman, pulled the starter rope and when the saw fired up the old Dutchman jumped back and said "what's that noise?"

After I married and moved my new bride out of the city, returning home, saw her car at the local town car wash. Stopped by to be romantic, and all she could say was she had been sprayin it through 6 quarters and the dirt still wasn't coming off. I reached out and took the sprayer from her, pulled the trigger and made a clean swipe across her door. OHHH MY GOSHHHH, you mean you have to pull on that handle thing? And she's a brunette, ( who had only used automatic car washes before).

Steve, I know Stihl has the best name and reputation, but I have had a Poulan for 15 years and it has given better service that 2 previous Stihl's. However, personal preference will play the biggest roll in anyone's choice. Steve
