Hi, I bought a 60 and there is a gear clashing noise comming from what sounds like the rear case. When you first start the tractor and start moving and push on the right brake pedal, it make a noise like gears are jumping or not meshing together. The left brake works fine. Here's the funny part. It only does it a few times in the begining and then stops. Also the pto shaft make quite a bit noise when engaged. Do I have to worry about that too? Thanks

John, It sounds like a brake Shoe problem. Check the adjustment. If that isn't the problem, I would take the brake off and inspect the shoes, drum, adjuster, springs. As far as the pto shaft making noise, that could be real trouble. I had the same problem with my 53 "60" last summer. What had happened was the bushing that carries the clutch drum shaft between the trans and the clutch housing had worn so badly, it caused the oil seal in the trans. to go bad and the tranny oil got into the clutches and ruined them. Also it had completly wore the bushing out and was wearing away the housing to the point that a new bushing couldn't be installed. I had to buy another rear housing. Some models have a bearing instead of the bushing. I hope that yours does.
But that still wasn't the worst of it. The drum shaft had been rattling around for so long that it had ruined the pump, the idler gear and the clutch drum shaft. I wasn't a happy camper, as I had just bought the tractor less than a year.
The JD dealer wanted $1400.00 just to replace the clutches. I only paid $2800.00 for the tractor w/ bush hog. So I tackled the project myself. It was not to bad of a job. The worst part was keeping the clutches alinged while putting it back together. Then to add salt to the wound, when I was testing it out the hydraulics wouldn't lift the bush hog. So I took everything back apart, and found ( embarrased I missed it in the installation ), I found that the left port in the housing I had bought had been poured full of lead!!! Well, a torch and an hour later I was back in business. I certainly hope you don't have to go through all of this.If you have any questions feel free to e-mail me.
