620 axle color

I must admit I'm a Farmall guy but we are restoring a 620 green dash for one of our neighbors. It had been sandblasted before it was brought to us and we can't tell what color to paint the axles. Two John Deere people have told us different stories on the color. One says flat black and the other says yellow as the rear rims are. Who is right. We are trying to get it as original as possible. Thanks.

The axles didn't have a paint on them. They did nave a protective coating to resist rust. Looked a lot like cosmolene. It was soft and could be removed easily.

keiren, They were not painted at the factory. Flat black looks good if you want to paint them, but not yellow.

I bet deere didn't paint them at all. Too hard to slide the wheels in/out just like on the Farmalls.

I checked a picture of our 57 620 and I'd agree with the majority, no paint.HJ

Lots of books are now saying that Deere didn't paint them at all, there was just a bit of overspray of green at the housing end, and yellow where the wheel was (if the wheel was painted on the tractor...I'm betting it was installed in one piece at the end of the line).

There was a completely untouched original 60 at the Expo couple of years ago, and we all were noting that the axles were plain steel.

Black has become the defacto color of axles for those who need to coat, but I guess to be as true as to originality as possible, you should clearcoat them.
