Sorry for being on hear guys but I have a legit question, I have a chance to get a running 730D high crop really cheap for under a thousand I was wondering what it is really worth I've heard stories of them selling for over a hundred thousand dollars is this true I know nothing about John Deeres so any help would be appreciated.

Here's the deal. If it's an electric start 730 Diesel Hi-Crop, only 78 were built. Only 7 Diesels were built with starting engines. If this tractor has a verifiable serial number tag, and all the correct Hi-Crop parts, it's probably worth $20K or more to the right buyer. Without a verifiable serial number tag, it's worth about 1/2 that, just for the parts. This is the deal of the century, if you can pull it off.

well, the worst thing a body can do is get into something he know's nothing about. IMHO I would find someone that knows something about JD's and have them go with you if possible to check it out. And you know what they say about "if it sounds to good to be true" buyer beware adage. I saw a running JD 720D hi-crop that was being used by a nursery on ebay sell for $15K and it wasn't a restored one either; it looked like it had been used hard, so there is a market out there for them. But what are you going to do with it after you buy it? How much are you willing to invest to get it running again not even considering the cost to restore it? Think this out real good before you decide to jump into this with the thought of making some kwik cash; it usually doesn't happen that way. Asking about it here is a good start though; sorry to have to point out the down side of a transaction like this, but it's the way I see it when it comes to buying tractors; it's easy to buy, but usually harder to sell!

A rare tractor like a high crop would be worth a thourough restoration and you would be money ahead afterward, loose flywheel or not.

Thanks guys I appreciate your input,I went and looked at it and I think it may have been possibly taken off of a cotton picker or something it has a single front wheel and it's so caked with grease it would take days to gets the crap off of it to get any numbers.

Single front wheel? Does it have drop axles? Might be a 730 Drop Axle tractor, which are even more rare than a Hi-Crop!!!

Farmall--If it's got a single front wheel chances are it isn't a Hi-crop. still will be worth the thousand but not the big money. Gman

The 730's are rare, but the 630 is the one that sold for $140,000.00. I have seen 720 HC's go for around $15,000 but no matter what, under a thousand is well worth the money.

See if you can get the serial #. I'm sure some of the other guys will tell how many were made & if you give them the serial # they'll tell you if it left Waterloo as a HiCrop or as sumpthin else. If its serial number left Waterloo as a hi crop, it runs and you can get it for less than a thousand, I believe I'd be buying it unless it glows in the dark or really has an AWFUL AWFUL lot of other stuff wrong with it!

You've no doubt heard of their tendency to suffer from loose flywheels. If the flywheel is loose you'll generally hear a pounding sound on the right hand end of the crank. Usually sounds like something is wrong in or behind the belt pulley.

Their "diesel knock" can be somewhat unnerving if you're not used to it but it's just their way. Later.

I would jump all over it, if you don't want it I am sure you could easily get your money and then some back. I have never heard of one going for a hndrer grand, but nice ones can get up there. I think the distillate or all fuel ones are the most valuable - someone please correct me if wrong. If you don't want it be nice and tell someone on here where it is! Like me!! Good luck, Fireman
