I am looking to buy a 435 jd. What should I look out for on these machines. anything that would cost a mint. I am not up on the GM 2 stroke engine, or this tractor in general. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

I own two of them one is a 1968 standard set wheel base the other is a 1969 power set wheel. The bigest thing I can tell you is the injecters stick alot and it will only fire on one jug compression test won't help you figure compression it out it's a two stroke. 440 cat diesel is the same mane drive train and all.430 has many of the same parts but the week link is the live PTO. 435's eat the main inputto the motor

Make sure the top grill piece made of white metal (unatainium) is there & intact. None made new & the salvage supply is $carce. The front axle casting if it isn't a swept back axle maybe cracked. New re-production castings are avalable. The blower case or rotor(s) often get split from freezing condensation. Pull the round cover held with three bolts above the pto. With a strong light inspect the ring & pinion for wear. If the tractor was overballasted & lugged in 1st or 2nd gear with old/dirty/cheap/condensation trans lube the gears will be worn. The "S" series engines with only 17 to 1 compression were poor starters. Damage from ether is commom. Rebuilding with 21 to 1 "N" series pistons/sleves/N35 injectors is required or you may dislike the tractor. The origional steering wheel is likely gone & re-pos are either different looking or serious $$$. Only 4625 made, restored tractors are rarer than 320's & worth about the same. May depend who you ask as well. Tractors with any of the following options power steering ,remote hydraulics, three rib fenders, dual rockshafts, float ride seats, fourspeed trans & 34" rear tires are less common.
