4520 ??

I have a 4520 that the PTO wants to turn when you get above about 1500 RPM, by turn I mean hard enough to turn a grain cart or stalk chopper even with PTO brake engaged. Any ideas on what the problem might be and do you have to split tractor? Also how much work and parts to add cooler to make basically a 4620?

Thanks

Gunner

Gunner, Being your tractor is a Syncrorange your brake problem is a secondary failure like previously posted. If you correct your primary problem first you may not have to go into the brake. If you do they are to different repairs and splits anyway. Your primary problem is that your PTO clutch located inside the engine flywheel with your traction clutch is dragging. The dragging may be a result from slipping / warping or oil leakage mixed with dirt and clutch grindings or both and have made the disk and plates sticky and gummy causing them to drag. The PTO clutch is hydraulically engaged and oil will leak from the PTO engagement pistons. Either way fix your clutch whatever its problem is when you split the tractor at the engine and then see how your PTO brake works, if satisfactory then don't worry about brake repair. If brake needs to be repaired then go after it. The longer you wait the more damage to the brake from the clutch drag will result. Good Luck Dave W.

The tractor has a syncro tranny. The brake still has some effect and the more RPM the more the PTO turns and harder to stop which leads me to belive oil leak. Just didnt know where. 1500 RPM PTO will just slowly start turning and can be controlled by brake, full throttle it will overpower brake and spin PTO almost full speed.

Check the ajustment on the pto control valve linkage under the dash. Use a 2x4 pressed against the pto to stop it from coasting not body parts.

Gunner, Depending on which transmission your tractor is equipped with will determine what to look for. If your tractor is a power shift it may be simple and it could be very serious. If it is a Syncrorange then the areas of concern will change. Will it drag if the tractor is setting still and the transmission in Park? Give me some more information and I will try to help. gunner, sounds like your brake/clutch is shot! my pto turns on my 2510 but no where near like yours does, mine will turn a brush hog but not the feed wagon.....but i think its your brake i havent split mine to fix yet because of the price but if it keeps up im going to have to. sorry i couldnt be of much help....oh one other thing you can do (i dont know how safe it is but i heard it on here but never tried it) is you can have your tractor idleing or what ever it takes to get pto to turn and see if you can stop it by grabbing it with your hands.....personally i dont advise this i think it sounds kinda stupid...

Gunner,

PLEASE don't grab your PTO, that is awful advice. (John, I'm not saying this was your advice, actually you said the opposite.) If the answer is you can't stop it with your hand, you could easily end up with a broken arm, or worse.

Secondly, you probably have two problems. First of all, it sounds like you have an internal hydraulic seal leak that is causing the PTO clutch to come on. The higher RPM causes the seal to leak more, causing the clutch to come on more.

When this happens it overpowers the PTO brake and the PTO shaft turns. This has probably burned the PTO brake out which is the second problem you'll need to look at.

Obviously, this is somewhat speculation, but I have seen this before on older machines.

Good Luck with the repair, and please stay safe.

Lefty
