I work for a JD dealer here in southwestern Ontario and have for years recieved our John Deere oil from Imperial Oil (Esso). Yes everyone starts with the same stuff out of the ground--it is the additives that make the oils different from one another.

Just like everybody else does, it goes to low bidder then they specify additives

Geeze, I hope it wasn't Valvoline. Valvoline was the worst oil ever produced.

Unless they have changed lately, Shell was making it.

I work for John Deere, and Shell has never made oil for them, it is Esso, Esso refines it than, John Deere puts there additives in it so it is up to there standards. That is how it is done!!

A friend who works at JD Davenport said years ago Deere used SHELL oil as factory fill for the 955 CID V-8 eingines they used in 890 excavators..... But that just lasted for a few months... Seems that the SHELL didn't like the extreme temp change from inside to outside and then start-up and the oil would jell up.... and blew-up 2-3 engines before They found the cause. I'm sure there's been many changes since then... the Rotella I use in My truck doesn't have that problem.

To be a little more specific, I have actaully been at the faciltity that blends the oil for Deere. The name of the company is Northland Oil in Waterloo, Iowa. I've witnessed the oil blended and bottled there. To say that it's Shell, Esso, Valvoline, etc. is WRONG! Plain old refined oil is generic, and doesn't really matter where it came from (brand). What makes ANY oil unique, whether it's Shell, Valvoline, Mobil, Quaker State, Pennzoil, K-mart, Wal-Mart, etc. is the ADDITIVES!!! In this case, John Deere specifies THEIR OWN additives, which makes it uniquely John Deere oil. It makes no difference where the base stock oil comes from, or who blends it!

I work for John Deere (in a factory), and used to work for Deere in Engine Engineering. Deere has oil blended to their specifications. The oil itself could be from a number of major refineries, such as Amoco, Ashland (makers of valvoline), Mobil, etc. Since oil is basically the same, as refined, it really isn't all that important which refinery it comes from. What makes oil on the shelf unique is the additives that are belnded in. It all depends on which refinery has the best price at the time, as to where the oil comes from. The oil is then blended with all of the anti-wear, anti-foam, anti-gall, etc. additives that JD specs out. This is done by an outside company that only blends and bottles the oil for Deere.
