I had asked you guys the value of a 40-S a few days ago . I brought it home last weekend . Now I need some more help !

I was warned that the shifter would get stuck in gear and it has a couple of times . The man I bought it from told me that the end would need to be brazed up where it is worn . I took it out and it has been brazed on one side before .

I cannot post any pics yet so I will describe best I can .

The end of the lever has a circular boss on each side of the shaft . If you were sitting on the tractor , the boss on the right side has not been brazed and shows little wear and projects about 1/32" from the shaft . The boss on the left side has been brazed . It projects about 1/16" from the shaft and looks pretty worn .

I can braze it up here at work and machine it to whatever it needs to be . The question is , how much is it supposed to project from the shaft or am I barking up the wrong tree anyway ?

Please help , I really like this tractor and am ready to put it to work !

Thanks !

I have a JD 40w that has a later shifter like a 430 with tower that has pattern in it.I was going
to change it back until I talked to an old time
JD mechanic and he thought there was a bulletin on
changing these over. I can't prove it though. The
later shifters shift lots better and safer.

Glad you brought this up. I had a 40S a while back and it had the 430 type quadrant. I thought someone had changed to a 420 or 430 transmission. But it looked original. My 40 parts book does not show this type for a 40, but I will bet you are right and some came like that.

Ford Man, the housing that the shifter sits in, will have a small pin that fits in the groove in the shifter (facing front) if this pin is the slightest bit loose, the shifter will not shift good and will let you get it into 2 gears at once. This pin is made of hardened steel and usually will not wear much. What happens is the hole in the housing will wear and let the pin be loose. You can braze the pin from the outside to the housing to stop any movement. Make sure the groove in the shift lever fits TIGHT on this pin. If the groove on the shift lever is too loose, lay the lever on an anvil and hammer the slot tighter until it will just slide over the little pin. This is just one problem these trans. have, there are other parts that can wear and cause poor shifting, but tightening up in this area will make a world of difference in the quality of shifting.
