Does anyone know how to get the governor apart to replace the inside bearings. I see 1 snap ring agains the gear but can't move the gear to get the ring off. Does it take a lot of tonage to press apart or is there a simple solution. Any advise would be appreciated. Oh yes, it is off the tractor and on the bench. Thanks Fred Wilke

Fred are you talking about the bearingon the mag. side under the spring, that would be the only reason to remove the snap ring, and it's a booger to press off I have bent a shaft or two replacing the bearing. You need to pull the mag drive off then press gear and bearing off, because they are both keyed on to shaft. I believe that you're trying to replace the fly bearing on the slide sleeve - The easiest way to do this is to press the drive gear from the shaft (bearing race for shaft bearing will also come off - Be very careful to support the gear square and close to the shaft as it does take quite a bit of pressure), then you can 'operate' on the fly bearing. The snap ring can be tough - you will need a good set of external ring pliers (the type that actually look like pliers - the adaptable tools aren't strong enough for this operation) to remove the ring. Deere uses these rings elsewhere, so the money won't be spent in vain - I bought a set of Craftsman ones for $19. If the sleeve is worn, or the new bearing won't stay on the collar firmly, replace the sleeve while the unit is apart. Don't be afraid to drill & re-pin the weights, either, as tighter pin-to-gear-to-weight will give better throttle response.

Be sure you take the mag. off BEFORE you try to put the cover back on the opposite end, you can BREAK a mag. housing if it doesen't line when you tighten the bolts up!! LGD

Been there, done that!! Lucky my mag needed rebuilding anyway. Chalked it up to experience, and bought a new one.
