OK here we go... I have just finished a '45A and in getting it started again I am having trouble, I have good new gas and carb is refurbished via Robt's Carb. I have spark and it will "pop", then it will backfire, throwing the flywheel back. The mag trips way before the timing mark for "left Hand Impulse", (like at 4:00 instead of dead on 3:00). I moved the mag forward as far as it will go, but it still fires early. I think I may have missed the Gov to Cam timing by one gear, I put the radiator on before I put the Fan and Shaft on the Gov. So I had to loosen the Gov. and tilt up and back to get the fan to fall in and bolt up. (goofy me). I think the Gov gear and shaft may have rotated off time with cam or the Mag tripped when I raised the Gov off the block. What do you all think? Just lookin for an answer or confirmation. Thanks!

~Sam, line the L/H impulse on the flywheel up with the case mark (at 3 o'clock behind flywheel), then pull the mag & look at the mag drive coupling on the end of the governor shaft, the slots in it should be fore & aft & (parallel to the ground), if not lift the governor & time it so they are.
~If you had the mag apart it wouldn't hurt to make sure the impulse stop ring is set so the mark at the top of the stop ring is about 2-1/2 graduations left of center (assuming a wico "C" or "X" mag)

Clooney, I have a quick question for you: On my '41 model B, I have a similar problem. I bought a used mag, type C. I have a book on repair of magnetos, and it acknowleges that the marks are there, but makes no suggestion for settings. The impulse is late, and I suspect the wrong graduation setting on the stop ring. Would a model B have the same setting as you suggest for the A? Thanks. ---===] jer [===---

---===] jer [===---, The center straight-up mark is 12.5* & each graduation is 5*, so 2-1/2 graduations left of center would be 25* lag angle, 3-1/2 left of center would be 30*, 4-1/2 left of center would be 35*. ~The lag angle isn't dependent on the mag it is dependent on the tractor/engine. Depending on the tractor, fuel used, piston configuration, compression ratio etc., the lag angle can vary. I usually set most to 25*-30* & adjust from there for best starting & running. The lag angle actually sets the running timing as no matter what the mag lag angle is set at, the mag is installed so the impulse snaps at TDC (L/H impulse). When the RPM comes up & the impulse quits retarding the timing, the mag then reverts to running timing. ~The only time it will matter is if the lag angle is so far out of adjustment the mag can't physically be turned far enough to get it to snap at L/H impulse to case mark.
