Clutch Problem

Having gotten tired of needing a gorilla to disengage the clutch on my 47 A, I tried today to adjust it. There seems to be no in-between, it either must be adjusted up requireing great effort to disengage or it will slip or disengage on its' own. It does not snap in like it should unless I back the adjustment off, in which case it wll slip. Is it time for new discs, or is something else out of sorts. Thanks.

Very worn facings can cause the difficult snap or slip (go -vs- no go) trouble you describe. If however the facings are acceptable, possibly the operating sleeve is moving too far allowing the toggles to tilt too far over center. This however is a fairly rare problem and not fun to fix!

I'd first check for wear between the dogs and the bolts. This wear can often be of considerable aggravation while adjusting the clutch. You might look for this wear before taking the pulley off. With the clutch in the disengaged position, turn each bolt back and forth with an open end wrench (cotter key still in place) while watching the end of the bolt. You may notice a specific position where each bolt stands out of the pulley a little more. A dip of ten thousandths can be a lot! If you find this difference, you might try setting each bolt back to its worn spot after every adjustment before trying the clutch for snap. You might get a bit better idea as to what the trouble really is before you tear it clear apart.

If none of this fixes the problem and the facings are in good condition, it's time to measure the travel of the operating sleeve, check out the toggles and the condition of the toggle sockets in both the sleeve and the dogs.

HOW ARE YOU ADJUSTING THE CLUTCH?TRY ENGAGING THE CLUTCH LEVER, AND TIGHTEN THE THREE NUT ALITTLE AT A TIME. THEN TRY IT DISENGAGE IT. SHOULD GET SNAP. IF THIS DOESN'T HELP CLUTCH MIGHT NEED TO BE CLEANED AND CHECKED FOR RUSTED OR WORN PARTS.
