My John Deere 4000 brakes don't feel up to snuff, you just touch them and you got brakes big time. I don't hear any rackett or haven't found any shavings indicating brakes are going out. Is there anyway to check the wet brake set up to see if the brakes need to be rebuilt.Any ideas would be welcome thanks Gman (Garland)

If the linings are coming off they will be in the hyd. suction screen. You have to drain the transmission oil to get it out. The plug is to the rear of the hyd. filter. The square of your
half inch ratchet loosens the plug.

Only way to check brakes is to remove an axle housing and visually inspect them.

Thanks fellows for the comeback, this 4000 is a little modern,I'm use too working on these old two cylinders. When I purchased the tractor it had a red type hydraulic fluid it took two flushes of J.D. Hygard to get that garbage out, lift worked 100% better but brakes were still awful sinitivy (spelling stinks)I'll check the screen and see if there's any trash on it. thanks again. Gman
