I talked to a guy a while ago that had a 49 M for sale. Here is the punchline, he wanted $3500 for a
tractor that might give 20 hp at the drawbar. It's people like him that are driving up the prices so high that you have to be rich to purchses a good running tractor for a reasonabe price. This hobby is just getting to expensive for anyone to have fun with it. I know the demand for a model m is not that high.

I live on the fringe of a large metro area. Hence there are alot of 10,20 5 acre property owners in need of a mowing tractor. They can spend 15 to 25 thousand on a new one or 3500 on an anteque to do the same job. So a tractor the size of an M in the utility configuation would easily fetch 3500 in my area. This is why I've travelled 50 miles to buy my tractors, they tend to be a little more cheeper.

No, pal, it ain't the guy that asks too much fer his tractor, it's the guy that has too much money to spend on a tractor and pays too much for it. Fact is, how many people do you know that are rich that made their money in antique tractors? No, rich guys dealing in antique tractors made the money doing something else. But, I do believe having wealthy people investing in antique tractors runs the values up, I guess that has to be OK even if it makes it tough for the average guy to enjoy this hobby. Looking around for a bargain is part of the challenge of this hobby, right or wrong.

Actually, THIS is the punchline..... The value of an item is determined by the amount that people are willing to pay for it! The "M"s do not interest me, but they have a lot of appeal for many people, primarily because they are small enough to be stored and transported easily. The inference that an item is overpriced because the buyer can't afford it is annoying.
I would be interested to see what kind of prices YOU would set if you woke up in the morning with 4 "M"s in the yard to sell. Would you be offering them for $400 each?
Your opinion of what an item is worth is not nearly as important as the opinion of the man who actually BUYS it!
Try stamp collecting, or beanie babies.

The idea that you somehow know me is not only petty and empty headed, it's totaly absurd! Who gave you the divine right to judge me or my repore with people.

My grandfather had 43 tractors on a twelve acre farm not because he was a crook but because he was honest and fair with the people he dealt with. It seems in this day and age their are to many people would would rather be unfair and money hungry than honest and decent. That is why this hobby is becoming way to expensive. Buy the way, never assume anything about anyone, it makes you look very unintelligent!

I don't get it. How does the question of how much you'd set the price on an M translate into some form of judgement?

You still didn't answer the question. What would you set as a price on an M if it were sitting in your yard?

Also, I do wonder what sort of farming your grandfather was in that he had 43 tractors and only 12 acres. I'd presume that he was also a tractor collector, but it's obvious that presuming anything is a bad move at this point, so I won't presume that.

Personally, I have an M in the shop and it's one that was rebuilt from a total wreck. It's decent now, but it surely took up a lot of time for my dad and I to put back together. Since he's gone now the poor little M is worth a lot more to me than $3500.

If you wanted my M, I'd have to price it well above $10,000 and if you wanted my dad's 420c, that one would be over $20,000. In other words, they're not for sale. Not at any reasonable price, anyway.

Steamer; Better be careful about setting a price on your favorite tractors someone may cough up the cash then what would you do??? P.S. This guy wanting to sell the pretty M has
really caught everyones attention ! I'll bet its sold allready. I guess that means the next one is $4000.00 Supply and demand no more supply being
made.Demand must still be there , look at all the attention.

Have you checked the prices of L's and LA's ? I just spent $1400.00 on a complete engine rebuild, and I haven't even started on the rest of the driveline or sheetmetal yet. I do agree that some people are driving the prices up because they are willing to pay more for a tractor than what it may be worth. Like my daddy used to say " it's only worth what someone is willing to pay for it"

I've got 2 M's for sale, both are in very good mechanical and cosmetic shape including paint, but neither could be called pretty(M's never were) or very useful/handy(M's never were!) But either one of 'em will cost ya $3500 if ya want 'em 'cause that's about what the market bears for a M here in Upstate, NY Pete

You must be one of those guys who's POed that you can't buy good running tractors for $500.00 anymore. Grow up---nobody is holding a gun to your head, and there are a LOT of affordable tractors out there, if you look around, and ask around. Something else you might want to consider is what the price of a new 20hp tractor is at your friendly local JD dealer.

YOU are the one who started being sarcastic, pal---the reason I don't post my e-mail address is because I don't have time to respond to twits like you. Grow up and live in the real world---tractors aren't going to get cheaper just because you think they should, or you wish they would, or by castigating people who ask what they think is a fair price. You want to buy cheap tractors? Go inhabit the SOB (some other brand) boards.

There is only one thing that determines value of anything: What the buyer and seller agree on.

First and foremost, if you're looking for a low-buck tractor to do actual work then you should skip the M. It's a collectors item at this point. Take your $3500 and buy an older Kubota with front wheel assist, pto, possibly hydraulics; all of which will make that little ole' Jap tractor run stinking circles around an M. Kubotas are good tractors and their tough little turds.

The other guy is always a crook,if you had a tractor for sale someone would be saying the same thing about you.An old man told me one time,
"Everyone is a crook,except you and me,and I'm
not so sure about you".

JD675x7 - -Is right, 2 grand is just the basic starting point for a good restoration. Most of the time when you buy a restored tractor, you get the man's labor for free. Also $3500 is not a lot of money at today's prices for products and parts. How about 25 grand for a common auto? Or 20 grand for a new John Deere with 35 horsepower?

Try sending an M engine out for an acid dip and COMPLETE rebuild. You'll soon stop bellyachin about 3500 bucks.

I think what has screwed up the balance is people
thinking paint = restoration. A good tight unworn out original paint tractor unfortunatly won't
get as much attention as an worn out cracked and welded but shiny paint sprayed over to cover up tractor will. Nobody is forceing you to buy this tractor shop around then go back. Don't let the heat and excitement of a big auction screw up good judgement !

Amen to that! If you are going to go to an auction, you really NEED to have a fair idea as to what it is worth, decide what you would pay---AND NEVER STRAY ABOVE that point. Auctioneers love to get you excited and willing to bid up their offerings to crazy levels.

Likewise, if you go to a dealer, take along one of those 24 point checklists, let the dealer see you use it, and make your judgement according to what you find out about the tractor as to whether or not an asking price is reasonable or not. If the dealer is insisting on unreasonableness, WALK AWAY! Walk away from private sellers also if they want more than common sense would dictate.

KJ Kezeli;
If it has been completly restored he might be loosing money on it. Paint/ bearings/ tires/ engine work/ transmission gears/ steering wheel/ radiator/ sheetmetal parts/ machine shop labor can all add up to a lot of money. If it is a worn out piece of junk $3500 is a lot money for it. If it is a good restored tractor it could be a very good deal. A person doesn't have to work very hard to put over $2000 in a restoration anymore and that's donating all your labor for free.

Yes, I have to agree.

It's not the asking price that makes things expensive...it's that if someone pays it, a new "standard" is set.

Kind of like comps in real estate.
