I have a John Deere item that hangs on the wall. Its made of cast iron and is about 17" high and 11" wide. Its shows a deer jumping thru a belt(belt for your pants)It has a picture of a walk behind plow at the bottom. It has a compartment, maybe for letters. It has JOHN DEERE (around the belt) and MOLINE,ILL 1847 under the deer. These names and the plow are raised in the casting. It looks like it was green at some point. This item is well made, not a piece junk. Was this a promotion item from John Deere?Or did dealers only have these or were they sold to public? Thanks for your help.

On the back there should be a circle or square mark were they poured the metal in the casting. About the size of a dime. The new castings are mostly square. the old ones were always round. Old wood burning stoves were the same way.

~Andrew, I have the same item you are referring to hanging on my shop wall. Most of those floating around are reproductions & go for $25-30 at the swap meets. ~Even the repo's are made of heavy casting & weigh plenty. A year or two ago I was trying to figure out if mine was a repo or original due to the fact it was given to me by a relative that had it over 40 years & received it from a Deere dealer originally. ~I never did figure if it was original or not. Some of the posts I got back referred to being welded on the back but others said they were all made that way. One person wrote me a long E-Mail & said Deere had a bunch of them made for a promo to celebrate one of their anniversaries.
~ If you get any further information post it please.

The 2000 dealer John Deere calendars featured memorablila, one item of which is what you have. It states that these were given to dealers in 1937 for Deere's 100th Anniversary (90 years in Moline).

Unfortunately, there must be a gazillion of these things for sale on eBay. Most are reproductions made in recent years - they are like the cast iron John Deere OP tractors (and others) made in china - junk. If you're not familiar with eBay, go to www.ebay.com and then do a search for Deere +cast Note that there is a space between the Deere and the + sign and no space between the + sign and cast.

Another item you'll find in that search is a cast iron seat with a leaping deer and 1847 cast into it. I have no idea if any of these are original or if there ever really was an original seat like that.

Even more unfortunately, the guy who provided a lot of the pieces for Deere's calendar can't tell the difference between the original wall hanging (similar to your item) and the copies. Can anyone on here tell us the differences?

Stan

If it's been around that long, it's probably an original. Most of these cast iron offshore-made repro items seem to have surfaced in the last ten years or so. Other than that, I have no idea.

Sorry!

Stan

Andrew I have no idea, but if its old and has something to do with John Deere it's no telling what it's worth. I saw a wind up John Deere buggie clock bring 626.00 the other day on Ebay and I was guilty of bidding on it but couldn't quite cut the mustaard. If you really want to get it's worth put it on ebay there are a lot of bidders out there and you will get what it's worth,I would like to have it but to be fair to you it would haqve to be put up for bid.If you're a John Deere collector set on it and enjoy the thing.
