Hi everyone. Please excuse my lack of Deere knowledge, I've just always been more partial to Farmalls and Fords. Until recently, when I saw an ad in the paper "John Deere B, 300.00 or trade". After calling, my information is- That is not a misprint. The engine is stuck, year is unknown. Paint is horrible. My main question is, what size of Farmall is this B comparable to? Please dont respond with airheaded answers naming the smallest Farmall machines, because I came in here civil, and would like to be treated as such.

Thanks,

68 Mag

I thought this humorous and true story might be enjoyed.

Friend of mine used to work for an IH dealership. The owner did most of the sales work. He used to exclaim; I never worry if I'm taking an M out to demonstrate against an A. If I'm taking an H out to a farm that has a late model B though I gotta be real careful! The H has more HP & generally there isn't much problem but them late B's are TOUGH. With that gearing, even a tired one can whip an H in a really hard pull! Gotta be careful against them late B's.

As for what yours compares to, see the other posts. Generally the early styled all fuel B's are doing well to top 18 HP on a dyno so it depends on what year the B is.

Thank you for coming in cival I think this is what we're supposed to do here instead of those pointless color wars. I think the best comparison would be, in order of the B upgrades, the F12, then the H, Then the super H. I lean toward JD myself but there is some red paint on my farm too, I just say I never met an old tractor I didn't like. Have fun.

The B having been built with 3 engines upgraded as time went along. Up to 1938 it was comparable to a C Farmall. Then it was up graded to like a H Farmall. The last two years it was more like the Super H.

JD 'B'- compare to IHC Farmall 'C'. Home farm has 38 B from grandfather and 2 H's, B is not quite as strong on plow/disking. Both H and B usefull with 2 row cultivators-especially sweet corn. Wagon hauling about same, advantage H on road. Power comparison to engine size: early B about 150 cubic inch, later about 170ci-remember H turns about 50% faster. Still good light duty farm and heavy garden tractor. RN

Let's examine this issue a little closer. Since the B was made for 17 years and the motor had 3 different bores and strokes as well as compression increases, it would help to know if you had an unstyled B, a 1939-1940 model, 1941-1946 model or a cyclone 1947-1952 model. The unstyled was pretty close to an F-14 Farmall. Just a tad stronger than the F-12. the 39 and 40's were just a bit more, but not as much as the early Farmall H's. The 41-46's were even more and getting closer to the H, but still not quite. The 47-52's were very comparable to an H, with lower transmission gears. Hope this helps, Steve

Steven,

Excellent analysis and comparisons!! Our '41 B was not nearly as powerful as a neighbor's Farmall H - he pulled 2-14"s and we pulled a 1-16" plow (2-12" after we got it re-powered with a "Cyclone" engine). Our '52 B would outwork my cousin's H by about one round out of 10 when plowing together (both with 2-14"s).

The B is similar in horsepower and size to the H farmall.
