830 two cyl. parts availability

I grew up with two cylinder tractors and love using them, in fact, that's all I farm with, a '51 "A", a 730D, and my 830D. They've been good tractors and I'm content with them but am a bit concerned about parts availability for the 830. JD hardly even has any gaskets for it anymore, and few other parts, according to my dealer. Maybe it's just the dealer that doesn't want to work to get the parts, I don't know. The old girl still runs very well, and we went through the engine several years ago, when almost every part was in stock at the dealer, so it probably still has a bunch of hours left. My question is this: Should I be worried about keeping the tractor in working order or are there places to find most parts for these nice old horses? I use it for tillage on about 80 acres/year so it doesn't get too many hours put on, but I'd like to be able to continue using it. Or, should I be retiring it and find a newer tractor to take its place? Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

I vote for you to keep the old girls, the newer tractors have computers and gizmos that takes a rocket scientist to fix. I posted a post on "tractor talk" about catalog or online part availability. There should never be a problem with parts availability, just with knowing where to go.

Ted,

I think it's great that you are using the 2 cylinders in your farming operation. Retiring your 830 would be a shame. Here are a couple of numbers for places that may be able to help you with the parts you need: Dennis Polk Equipment at 1-800-795-3501 or Dengler Tractor Inc. at 513-423-4000. I know there are other places and fellow collectors that could help you also but hopefully this will get you started. Good Luck!!

Jim

Jim,
Thanks for the quick reply. I'll give those guys a jingle and talk to them. I need no parts at the present time but who knows. I had always hoped I could continue farming with my two cylinders and when I retire, restore them, and have fun with them. That's a few years down the road tho. To replace that 830 would require a bigger investment than I care to get into. Thanks again. Ted

I have had both the 730 and 830 and have had No problems getting parts however in some cases make sure you have a good check book balance. My suggestion is to subscribe to the green magazine.

They have just about every parts source advertising in it. They also have good articles and maintenance tips. Its publisched monthly and is well worth the 30.00 per year.
