Hey guys:

I know where a 404 Turbo engine is out of a 4430. What does it take to put this engine in a 4010 or a 4020. I don't have a tractor or the motor yet but am thinking of possibly doing this. I want the tractor to still be useable for farming and use for pulling at local county fairs, and know this has ben done before.

Also, what is teh difference in engines on the 4010 and 4020 besides fuel filters, sleeve size? Is that it?

What does it take for that conversion? It will most likely be a syncro-range transmission, I know the hood will have to be modified for the exhaust. Will an adapter plate be necessary? Which clutch would you use? This sounds liek it could be a very sweet project.

Thanks for the help

Johnny, I am just finishing a repower like you are talking about. It has and can be done and there is many ways to do the many things that will be a factor in doing this. When I do these conversions I will not alter the frame length of tractor as some do and some don't. Some also move the radiator as the newer series 404 engine has the larger water pump mounted to the engine block verses head and positions the water pump / fan way deep into the radiator core. I do not move the radiator forward either which becomes a bit of a trick. There is some machine work in involved to make the water pump work without moving the radiator. The other problem is the front pulley required to maintain original location of the original front hydraulic pump coupling. I used all the original front pump coupling and kept it in its original location so it to does not interfere with the radiator either. The later 404 engine will bolt to the 10 and 20 series clutch housing and the original flywheel will also bolt to the later 404 crankshaft. If your repower tractor is a gas model the starter ring gear is different and the flywheel will have to be remachined for a diesel ring gear or a diesel flywheel from a 10 or 20 series tractor will have to be acquired. The starter from any diesel 404 will work on the original 10 / 20 series diesel flywheel / ring gear. Other problem areas is the turbo under the original hood as this too will become a challenge. Just a few pointers to let you know what you are in for as the old saying goes been there done that and learned it the hard way! Good Luck, Dave W.

If you hadn't thought of it yet,you can't put that engine in an old style (remote valves under hood)get in the way.New style(side console)engine will fit but still need alot of other modifications.Cooling system will need work. And watch exhaust temp. But it can be done, and if you do it right it won't be cheap.Kind of an impractical field tractor, but would be fun to play with.So have fun.

I think that u would be better off just finding a good M&W Turbo kit for the 4010-4020 404cid, this would require lots less modification and a more stock appearance, The 404T in a 4020/4010 would likly require a larger cooling system for the engine then the 4020 runs, If u are planning on using the tractor for farming, then invest the money elsewhere is my suggestion, And if u wanna build a puller 4020, there is numerous engine modifaction u can do to increase hp without a turbo. So if u wanna ruin a perfectly good 4020, buy a RED tractor and u can modify all u want.
