I am working on a 47 John Deere A electric start and cannot get it to start cosistantly. Here is what I have did or found: compression 65#, new points, condensor & plugs, mag trips on the mark, has gas into the cylinders. This tractor will crank until the battery is dead without so much as a pop. Has good spark. I find if I jump it with another battery, choke it, open the trottle and then close it completely, it might fire off. Once I get it running, it will run until I shut off the throttle. Try to start it again in an hour, same problem. Can any of the great John Deere Techs out there shed some light on this mystery? Thanks.

Hey Guys, thanks for all the info. I think I have figured out what was wrong. It looks like someone had put a rebuilt carb on the beast and somehow bent the choke butterfly bottom 90 degrees. This made the carb always 1/2 choked! It still is a bit testy to start but works much better. Thanks again!

Shoot an appropriate amount of starter fluid in her just prior to starting cold. Give her a little air on the choke. Try it a few times to see what works best. If she starts readily and runs OK I tend to think the low compression is the likely cause as do some others here. She'll start on gas with low compression maybe sometimes but not always, eh, and maybe not in cold weather and she'll flood more readily too. She'll probably start warm OK.

First question is does the tractor run well when it is running? Will it idle slow and smooth without use of the choke? If not go for the carb first. If they won't idle they won't start. Ussually from a plugged idle port. The other thing on the electrical side is your mag cap and rotor. Although you are developing spark is it firing to the correct cylinder. Do you ever get a back fire. Remember with bad cap rotor or wires the cylinder with lowest compression or resistance will fire causing these back fires or coughing.

good luck signman

There is one or two things that have not been mentioned here. One is: open the compression releases up under the bottom of the cylinders before attempting to start. Any accumulated gasoline (from flooding) will be allowed to find a way out. The other question is: Do you have a chance to pull it with a pickup or other tractor? It would be a lot easier on that starter motor. Use one of the higher gears.
Just a couple of thoughts in passing. Hope it runs like my A. Good luck. ---===] jer [===---

I didn't see if your tractor is a gas or power fuel. The carb. should be DLTX71, or DLTX72. If it is one of these you have, then there will be a little cap over the choke control on the side of the carb. Remove the little steel cap and make sure the butterfly control hasn't jumped to the other side of the pin. If this happens, the choke lever will have no control over the butterfly.I hope I haven't made this too hard to understand. If so I will try to explain better. Good Luck, Don

After it cranks but refuses to start, immediately pull the plugs and post back and let us know if they are dry or wet. Assuming the ignition and plugs etc are good from what you said, I suspect either flooding or insufficient fuel so be sure you have clean fresh gas and the plugs are dry and the choke actually works (they have that lil spring under that cover you know) and let us know how the plugs look after you crank her. Good Luck Ol John T in Indiana

If your tractor is indeed a 1947 -press frame,
battery under seat-your compression is way low
should be about 125psi.if it is a gas tractor not all fuel. Also make sure your spark
plug wires have wire in them,do not use automotive
carbon fibre suspression wires as old tractors
don't have enough spark voltage to go through them
properly.Check valve adjustment,un-hook ignition,
open throttle, open choke, turn off gas and retest compression.
Also make sure it turns over good, not just barely.

~STUMPed, the compression is a little low but it should start with 65lbs.
~What color is the spark?
~Try new gasoline if the gas in the tank is over 1 month old.
~Make sure the choke is actually working.
~Try putting some 2 cycle oil in the gasoline to help seal the rings at low cranking speeds.
~Try opening the idle screw 1-2 turns during cranking to see if that helps.
~If you aren't even getting a pop during cranking you either have poor spark, no fuel, bad fuel, low compression no choke or no air.
~Having to close the throttle to get it to fire is usually a sign of malfunctioning choke or stale fuel.

compression is weak if compression is to low it wont start on its own.

You said you have gas in the cylinders. You're probably flooding it. After assuring yourself that there's gas in the cylinders, try opening the choke to about 1/4 closed and, with the speed control lever about 1/3 open, try it again. If it's like my (hand start) A, it'll fire somewhere on the way down to a dry combustion chamber.

your sure your starter switch is working correctly. it has double duty it sends voltage bypassing the coil resister during cranking if its not working it will be hard to start especially on a cold morning.
