I tried to start my 47' Long-hood B on Sunday. Should the battery be pos. or neg. ground? I put it on negative. If it is wrong, this will make the starter turn backwards, right? What direction should the engine turn? If it was turning backwards, that might explain why there was gas coming out of the air-cleaner. Or do I have a bad float? Also what weight of oil should I put in the engine for break-in and after? I live in Southwest Iowa, if that makes a difference.

Thank you for all your help as this is my first restoration.

Ryan

~Ryan, your battery should be hooked up positive ground but being backwards won't make the starter turn backwards.
~Looking at the flywheel from the flywheel side it should turn counter clock wise.
~Gas coming out the air cleaner can be caused by tight valves, too much gas due to a carb problem, spark plug wires hooked up backwards, mag mis-timed, cam out of time (LH exhaust valve should just start to open when "LH exhaust open" on the flywheel lines up with the case mark at 3 o'clock behind flywheel).
~Does it sound like it is trying to fire on an open intake valve, or backfiring through the carb while cranking?'

Clooney,
I don't think it fired at all while I cranked it, I didn't rebuild the distributor but need to. Would I be better with a magneto or distributor?I'm not sure if it is timed right. Ryan

~Ryan, pull the L/H spark plug & hook it to the L/H plug wire then lay it on the block. Then crank the engine (ignition on) & see if the plug sparks when the "L/H impulse" on the flywheel lines up with the case mark (3 o'clock behind flywheel) on the compression stroke.
~If no spark or yellow spark repair distributor or make sure coil is getting power.
~If it sparks at the wrong time swap plug wires at the dist or move the dist to get it to spark at the correct time.
~It doesn't matter if you have a distributor or mag, if either one is used & it makes a good spark it should run.

it is origonally positive ground. the starter will only run one way. the flywheel should run counter-clock-wise
