38 JD A, that is a tough question to answer without seeing what you have now....

~Here is the deal [well sort of],,, there were a few different PTO shafts offered on those un-styled A's & to make it worse there were some retro-fit kits available to swap those shafts over to the later standard size spline..

~Seeing as you have the rear housing with an ear [probably for a flipper guard] it sounds like you have a retro-fit shaft..

~What I usually do is take the old shaft with me when looking for a new [used] one & match the front part up to be like the one removed & the rear splines to fit what I need..

~If you want to try to buy a new shaft by phone give me an E-Mail & I will copy the un-styled "A" PTO shaft parts page & E-Mail it to you,,, that way you can see [& try to match] & possibly find out what you need,, then ask for it by part number....

I DO HAVE A JOHN DEERE PARTS CATALOUGE FOR THE UNSTYED A BUT HAVENT TRYED TO GET NEW YET BECAUSE I AM AFRAID TO KNOW WHAT THEY WOULD WANT IF IT IS STILL AVAILABLE.THE CURRENT SHAFT IS THE SMALLER SPLINE.

38 JD A, I don't believe you will find a new shaft.. You will have to call around for the later replacement shaft that has the spline size to fit your equipment..
