PTO powered backup generator

I have a JD60 and I'm looking to buy a pto powered generator as a power source for emergencies, it will only supply power to run a typical house, furnace, water heater, refrigerator, freezer, lights etc. I've heard not to use a 2 cylinder JD on the generator, why would this be?

Two-cylinders are not the best to use on pto's
If it is your only choice you probably won't use
it enough to worry. Just make sure you don't buy
a model where the generater runs fast and has a gear reduction down to 540 they are noisey on anything get one that runs slower I think they use
a chain driven gear box much quieter.

I have a 25kw generator. I run it with my 4020. I trye my 620 on it one time,and found it not smooth enough. I can see the light go blink,blink,blink.

With a loaded down two cylinder it almost looks like the old days of 25 cycle power before the conversion to 60 cycle.

We tried our 70 gas on our 30KW single phase alternator & don't recomend the results. The lights flickered & the generator gearbox howled with every power inpulse. It bounced/rocked more side to side than usual on the wheels The four pole generator seemed to have a harmonic frequency combined with the two cylinder's that added up. The results would likely be much smoother with a three phase alternator however.

Generators need a really smooth source of power to generate A-C current... Old slow running Deeres are Not smooth enough. You need at least a 4-cyl. engine. My Brother-in-law's Dad farmed with Allis Chalmers before He started buying Green equip. When He still fed cattle Dad ALWAYS had to loan Him His '51 FARMALL M to run the silo blower to fill silo before Dad put the corn picker on the M... The Neighbor's 630 wasn't smooth enough to run the blower. You could run the generator with Your 60 but You'd probably tear the generator up if You used it much near it's rated capacity.

That is also the reason a lot of seperator owners would not let a J D 2 cyl run there threshing machine.
