JD 420W won't start

I have a 1956 420W with a starting problem. Everytime I try to crank the starter, I get a spark at the positive battery terminal and then all the power goes dead. I have to unhook the positive terminal for a few seconds and hook it back up again. Then the power returns, but if I try to crank it, it goes dead again. I don't know if it is the voltage regulator, the starter solenoid, or if it is the on-off switch. This is an original 6 volt positive ground system. Any help in isolating the problem would be greatly appreciated...

Andy - I agree with Clooney, but could be a bad starter. Basically, the starter could be shorted out on the inside. If there is two things you should do for YOU and YOUR tractor is rebuild both the starter and the generator. It should only cost $100 - $150 for both and is a good investment and will remove two headaches for YOU....

It turned out to be the battery posts. They didn't look corroded but upon further inspection, they had some bad spots. I shined them up and it started on the second crank. Thanks for the help. Also, if you know where I can get a genrator rebuild kit for my tractor, I would love to get one. The generator hasn't worked since I got it and I have to leave it on a battery charger constantly. I go through at least one battery each year.

I personally do not rebuild generators. The Comm usually need to be trued and a new set of brushes installed, and of course appropriate regulator. I send them Automotive Mfg., Inc., Richmond, VA. Every one has come back right the first time, and have never had to send one back. Phone no. 804.321.6861

~Andy, it sure sounds like a poor connection at the positive battery cable to battery post. The only way that connection will spark is if the connection has resistance. Try cleaning the battery post & inside the cable end then re-assembling.
