I have a model 50 JD and am starting to restore it. I decided to take the engin out first to see if it was OK. I am just ready to take off the head. I have worked on alot of engins, both gas and diesel, but never one like this. I Have the JD shop manual for the tractor, but it is not really clear on removing the engin. Is it easyer to split the tractor or do it all inframe? When I have the engin out I would like to check transmition and hydrolics. Are there any tips I could use to help this restoration go smoother? Anything would be a help.

Unless you need the practice, I would first remove the head and pistons, then check the block, There is a good possibility it is o.k. If it is o.k. I would dingleberry it,install new rings, grind the valves. Since I don't know what condition your tractor is, you would have to make the decision. my opinion only. As far as the tranmission is concerned, I would remove the shift lever take a look and check for broken teeth etc. It will need a good flushing anyway and replacing the 90W. Russ
