Dear Sirs:

I have a 1946 styled John Deere B and I want to remove the slack from the hand clutch. Is the bolt on the bottom of the hand clutch threaded into the reduction gear cover ear or just pounded into the ear mounting?

I don't want to break the ear off the housing trying to remove this bolt.

Thanks for any input on this question.

The bolt is pressed into the case housing. There are ridges that ressemble mini splines that run in the direction of the bolt that create the interference.

Some times you get lucky and it will come out easy but the odds are that this is the original bolt and is seized pretty tight.

If I was doing it I would fabricate a pulling device to pull the pin so you dont break the lug.You then can use this device on future JDs as you can expect to do it on every one that hasnt been replaced. Good luck and welcome to the challenging world of tractor restoration. Don

Don, I have these pullers available. They work very well and can save a reduction gear casting! Email me for more information. Mike
