I went to a Home Depot and was looking at the Scott's mowers. I can't beleive how much they are alike. I know the engines and lift of decks are different, but can someone tell me if they are as good as the John Deere brand. I know there is a about $1000 difference, but is it worth it?

I was one who thought the decision by Deere to manufacture the Sabre line and was a mistake. I don't doubt Deere is selling some tractors and it must be profitable or they wouldn't keep producing. However, I think the problem for Deere is down the road. I've spoken with a couple of Deere dealers who told me that customers who purchased a Sabre tractor thought they were buying a John Deere and expected a tractor with a long life. When some of the parts began to fail they complained that they should have purchased the Sears tractors if they weren't going to last any longer. Of course the dealers tried to remind these customers that they paid less money for the Sabre but apparently with no success. I think Deere has created a problem by putting their name on a tractor that is seen as inferior. Resale is another potential problem. Deere customres with a 30 year old 110 garden tractor get more than they paid for it if is in nice shape on trade in. I can't believe a 5-10 year old Sabre or Scotts is going to have much more value than a 5-10 year old Sears, Walmart, etc. tractor. I think it would make sense for Deere to produce the tractor for the Home Depot customer. But the Sabre line and the John Deere name association with Scotts lessens the mindset people have with John Deere and premium high quality tractors even though we know they come with a premium price tag.

Years ago when I needed to buy my first riding mower I was looking at 12 hp craftsman mowers when I really wanted a new John Deere but couldn't really afford it. To make a long story short, my dad convinced me that in the long run I'd be better off buying used JD in stead of comprable MTD type. I bought a 111, ran it for 12 years, normal maintainence only. When I bought my used 265 four years ago, I kept the 111 for when my son has his own place. He's still using it. I have a friend who is on his third Craftsman in that same period of time.HJ

Seems all most people want is a bargain when they buy new , and that's why Deere came out with them . When I bought a 3 yr old 140 all they said was you could have bought brand X new cheaper , and they were right . The 140 is still running all I've done to it was put a new carb on it . Since then I bought a 318 have about 1500hrs on it no problems . We do a lot of mowing , have snowplows for both also , use them to pull wagons and other dead vehicles all the time . If you want something to last the extra $$ are well spent on them . My niece had her new Sabre out to the farm last summer , she couldn't believe how much easier the 318 was to run and how much more it would cut , her's wasn't even a hydrostatic drive I thought it was to jerky starting and stopping . I sure wouldn't trade my old 318 for one . JIM

Can be lots of differences. And I`m not saying the Deere is the better machine either. But tomorrow or 5 years from now if you need a part for either machine, you can go to a Deere dealer. Try doing that atHome depot.

There was quite a lengthly discussion not too long ago on the Garden Tractor Board comparing the Sabres and Scots to the John Deeres and Talking about clip joints like Home Depot and Lowes. The conclusion was that the Sabre mowers were Deeres anwser to the Craftsman, Yard Machine, Ranch King or anything else that you might buy and run four or five years and then scrap. The Scots are just another cheapie that is built by Deere to someone elses specs. Guys that had bought mowers from Lowes and Home Depot had problems getting them serviced by the dealers when they had problems. Everyone was pretty much in agreement that when you want something to perform like a Deere and hold up like a Deere, You should be prepared to spend a little extra and buy a Deere from someone who will stand behind it.HJ

i used to sell jd about 3 years ago. at that time jd was just starting to build mowers for scotts. they were baised on the sabre line at that time. they were good mowers but had price in mind instead of total quailty. they had bushings in the wheels instead of bearings the tires were cheaper ect. i sold some sabres and had no problems. many people dont need a super heavy tractor.
