I've been thinking of looking for a dyno and wondered first and most important -how much is a used one worth and which ones to look for. From time to time I see them listed in auctions when a dealer sells out. I know M&W made them (do they still?)I assume they came in different sizes as tractor HP has gone up I thought maybe I could pick up an older one that say only goes up to 100HP for a 1000 bucks? Any comments appreciated!

Three years ago our shop had to buy a new dyno. The old one still worked good, but was not able to dyno the new combines because of a reduction in the gear box when hooked directly to an engine. It was a 450 HP M&W. We bought a new A&W and were only alowed $1500.00. We should have kept the old one for smaller tractors, but that might give you some idea what they are worth.

The old dynos are available but look it over real close before you buy. If the seller will demo it to you, this will help alot. Let him run it and get it up to temp. with the water turned on. The older ones used copper coils to circulate cooling water in the oil reservoir, and if not drained properly will split if allowed to freeze and put water in the hydraulic tank and possibly ruin the pump. Also the hydraulic pump and or valve assy. can become worn and not give you an accurate reading. Have the seller put something on it that you know the approximate hp of, and see what it reads. If he puts an old A jd on it and it dynos 80 hp you may have a problem. If you do get one change the oil in it, and if it will sit where it gets cold, blow out the cooling lines and put some RV antifreeze through the cooling system. They are a handy tool to have, I take mine to a couple of local shows and let people hook up to see what their tractors will do. ps it also shuts up the mouthy guy with the "hot" super M or JD G when it only dynos 45HP

I thought my 70 was a powerhouse until we got our M&W dyno home.My G(with.90 cast pistons)had more horses than my 70 gas did with aluminum high compression pistons in it.But without the dyno I would not have found the broken exaust spring and power jet in the carb missing. My friends and I went in partners on our dyno.We got a good one from a seasoned longtime puller.Got it for 475.00 and the only thing that is wrong with it is that it leaks a little oil.It will be a good investment if you get a good one. There is lots of horsepower to be found sometimes.Good luck

Price: Dynos at auction will bring as much as two people are willing to pay for one. And that is why we have auctions. Try to go to some of the larger tractor dealers and see if they have upgraded to a New dyno. That is usually as cheap as going to an auction and then you can ask them to show you it works.

M&W is still in business. They still sell some of the parts. I own an M&W and a year or so ago the packing in the pump needed to be replaced. With little trouble it was replaced. They have a web site for further info.
