720D Injection Pump Advice

I am looking for advice on where to get a 720d injection pump rebuilt. It leaks when not running, enough that I have to bleed the air to get it to run after a few days with the fuel shut off, or change the oil after a few weeks with it left on. I have pretty much confirmed the leak is around the pump shafts and want to get it fixed. I can get it off and back on, timed, etc, but I know better than to mess with the pump because I dont have the proper tools or test equipment.

My problem is I live in eastern Michigan about half way between Pontiac and Flint, and dont know anyone else with my masochistic passion for large diesel tractors, or have any experience with any not so local JD dealers.

As a last resort I will start calling diesel shops and JD dealers, but I would like to know if an exchange for a rebuilt pump is an option, or if I need to find to find a place that specializes in old iron to get it right.

Thanks

Guy Winohradsky

Guy If the tractor is running ok I would pull the transfer pump on the right end of the governer. The shaft seals will leak while setting as well as the pumps. If that doesen't stop it then pull the pumps and nozzles. We have a diesel service in BIGGSVILLE ,IL. that does good work and is very reasonable. I have "CRS"syndrome so I cant tell you the name but I will get it if you want. Don

The transfer pump was the first place I looked. Then when I didn't get any diesel under the pump I disconnected the lines to the injectors (easier than pulling them) and didn't get a drop. Finally I tried stopping the engine in different positions and got a diesel puddle under the pump.

Tractor runs great once I bleed the air to get it started. It seems a little weaker than I expected, but I found that the rack travel is not up to spec. I plan to fix that when I do the pump, so maybe I will be looking for clutch advice next.

Thanks

Guy:

I'm in the same boat. My old 70 D is undergoing a major engine re-build, so I thought I should have the pumps/injectors gone through as well. No one around here is real familiar with those pumps.

I'm going to send my units to Albert @Renaissance Tractor, in Chehalis, WA. He specializes in the old 2 cylinder diesels, and has been very helpful to me with advice via phone and e-mail. He has a JD pump test stand and such, and has told me that he tries to turnaround pump repairs in three days or so, so you could probably avoid an exchange. UPS there and back should speed things up.

His phone number is 1-800-784-0026 or 360-748-0026.

I'm sure there are other good shops, but his work comes highly regarded by many who have posted here before.

Guy, I know about the problem you are having with the injection pump. My family there in central lower Michigan has a 730D and I sent the fuel pumps and injectors to be rebuilt. I was extremely satisfied with the final product sent back to me. I do not have the info on me at this moment but if you need it please contact me and I will promptly get it for you. Good Luck!

Jim
