I have a 1946 B with a float ride seat and it has a power lift. Can I put a power trol unit on it? will i need to modify anything? will this work with my float ride seat, or will the lever hit the seat? Also, did they make any tractors origonaly with power trol and a float ride seat?
THANKS,
Joe

I know one thing, the 46 model B's didn't have float ride seats. Dryfus origonally designed the bench seat as a place to put batteries in the 47 model year. and the float ride came out in the number series. You might check your serial number again. Does your B have the pressed steel frame or the cast frame? Covered flywheel, electric start?

It has the welded steel frame, it has the open flywheel, and electric start. I want to make sure that we mean the same thing by FLOAT RIDE SEAT. my seat is metal, has the big spring.

Your seat I believe was available as an aftermarket seat. It would have a pan seat, spring, shock absorber, does this sound like yours. I don't think the powertrol handle will hit it.I believe you just change the valve body.

Russ is right that the power trol conversion is pretty simple as a valve body change involving about 6 bolts and a nut. There are a couple things to remember though. One of the bolts has a copper washer instead of a lock washer because it is under fluid pressure. I think it is the top right one. Also, check your parts manual or look at the JD dealer's computer to confirm that your rockshaft housing has the round lower right hole (of the 2 holes at the bottom of the valve body) not the square hole because the power trol has to have a spring that the power lift didn't use and that requires the round hole. Being a 46 you have some decent odds of it being made to accept the power trol valve body. Worst thing could be that you have to get the whole rockshaft body changed over too.

Jerry's right about the top right bolt requiring a copper washer instead of a conventional lock. Will leak oil without the copper washer. Power-Trol bolts were also a bit longer than the power lift. The round hole & spring is for the poppet type valve that was used to adjust the slow drop of the rockshaft. Oil going to the lift while raising pushes the valve open against the spring, essentially no restriction. Oil from the lift during a drop cycle has to pass through the adjustable valve gap. You adjust the amount of gap using the slow drop valve adjustment screw under the long cap nut and jamb nut that comes straight out the back. Both PL & PT had this adjustment.
