I'm having trouble getting the pony to start the big engine. Sometimes it will crank it and other times it won't. Has anybody ever had this problem? I beleive it's the overrun clutch or the regular clutch. The regular clutch seems to be thick enough. I took the overrun clutch out and it holds when it is turned by hand. I also put it in a vise and tried turning it with a wrench(protecting the splines and teeth) and it held. Any info would be helpful. Thanks,CHUCK

Have you adjusted the toggle length so that the spring at the left end of the toggle (above the pinion gear) is being compressed the proper amount?

I have seen the overrunning clutches NOT crank the engine though they seemed tight on the work bench.

I would remove the flywheel cover & try cranking with the flywheel exposed. You'll then be able to see if the pinion shaft is spinning but not the pinion gear or if the pony clutch is slipping & not turning even the pinion shaft.

I have the flywheel cover off. The pinion gear comes out and engages the flywheel sometimes it will turn and sometimes it won't. I have put a new clutch in it and adjusted the linkage as specified, but i still have the same problem.

Chuck,

My family has a 730D and had a slightly similar problem on our tractor. Upon invesigation I discover that the 3 adjusting bolts on the pony motor clutch were not adjusted properly or evenly. It was also discovered that our disc's were slipping and needed replacement. After replacement of disc's and proper adjustment the whole system works perfectly. Good Luck!

Jim
