My neighbor gave me a 40 JD combine. What years did they build this unit and were thay any good? Can you still get parts for this machine?

The little 40 was built from 1959 till I believe 1966. Roundbacks were built till 1963-ish then squarebacks from then on. I have a 1964 model with a 10'table, cab, and straw chopper. Works pretty well in oats and wheat. Soybeans I have a difficult time getting a good clean sample. It does well for the time it was built. Also have the 205 corn head. Our Deere dealer has been able to get everything I have needed, combine yards may have other things, some parts interchange with the 45.

I have a 40 Roundback with an 8ft head. It does a nice job in wheat and goes pretty well through soft spots in the field without getting stuck. It is slow and twenty acres a day would be tops. It tends to run hot when the tank is almost full and you are going up an incline. Go easy over rough ground when the tank is full. I broke the frame in front of the cylinder going too fast with a heavy load. In spite of these few faults, I love this combine because it is so little and cute. I keep the paint touched up and when it is visable along the highway I have had several people stop to inquire about it and ask if it is for sale. Some day it will be fun to take it to the old tractor shows and I will have something different for people to look at and talk about instead of just another green tractor. Last time I needed belts the dealer could get them. Other parts, you are pretty much on your own.
