Air in hydraulics; JD 60.

I recently replaced the O-ring/gasket on the piston in the hydraulic cylinder of my JD 60 Power Trol. The lift arms don't leak down now and there are no external oil leaks. The system raises and lowers OK, but the lift arms are spongy (at rest) and the pump growls mightily when it raises a significant load. I'm sure there's air in the system. The book says to operate the system up and down with the cap off to purge the air. Doesn't seem to work for me, although I see a little oil spitting when the control lever's in slow lift. I think I've made it worse. Any suggestions?

Yes, I agree with Clooney. Hydraulic pressure will purge out the air automatically.

~Zane, make sure you don't have a pinhole leak in the suction side of the system that is allowing the pump to suck air. Then make sure the system is full. If no problem there make sure you aren't using an oil that is prone to foaming.
