I bought a replacement stack for my JOhn Deere B as the old one is falling apart on me, I have a slight problem, it will not fit through the hole in the hood! The old stack (identical to the new one) had a breack in it of where you would put the bottom piece on, then put the hood on and then the top of the stack would slide over it, this new stack doesn't have that feature. Any ideas how to make it work? I don't want to cut the hood as I spent a lot of time fixing the cutout from before.

Thanks,

Karl

The factory Deere muffler does not have the flanges that jut out at each end the center portion, in fact, the factory style muffler does not taper down at the bottom like that one. It remains the same size to the base, and has the dent in the side like the styled A for the steering shaft to clear. I would call K&K Antique tractors, they have a lot of things that are not listed. Phone: 317-398-9883. Seems to be the ONLY option other than enlarging the hole. Todd

Here's what I found out on prices from Deere. Muffler for ser. # B60k-B95999 (AB1524R) is about $80. For ser. # B96k and up (AB2700R) will run about $46. Hope this helps. Wish I had your patience!

This muffler Fiasco is getting out of hand. If the muffler that you took off fit and the one that you bought doesn't it obviously isn't an "exact replacement", I don't care who says it will fit. It seems to me, however I'm not a mechanical engineer, that you have 3 choices,
A) make the hole in the hood bigger
B) cut the muffler into 2 pieces, install bottom piece then install the hood and then weld the muffler back together
C) go to John Deere and spend $48 for the right muffler Remember, if it doesn't fit you must acquit. Now an important question, where can you buy the hood repair patches for a B?

The patches are available at Shepards, Downing, Wis. and Restoration Supply. Some screw on the top, but it is better to get the weld in type. With the hood off I weld the patch on the inside then use JB weld as a filler. I have did several and you would have look very close to tell the hood has ever been cut. One note of caution the alingment is important so that when you drop the hood over the muffler it lines up. Russ

I went down to my shop and took a look at this replacement. It is made by Stanley Muffler Co. Inc. and is Part Number DR-4 it says it replaces Deere R21827R AB2700R according to my parts book the replacement muffler Part Number is AB2700R. The hood patch is the one sold for John Deere B's I have attached a link to a picture of this muffler. The problem I am having is that the hood will not fit over the flanges that jut out at the ends of the large center cylinder.

Thanks,

Karl

Karl:

I have one of those style mufflers, too. It came on my 70D, and the muffler from I think Farm and Fleet stores in Ohio. Those buldges might be the way Stanley constructs their muffler, but it is not, unfortunately, the design that will fit through a stock "B" hood, or hood patch for that matter.

I went to the tractor photo's on the site, and searched for pictures of Model B'. I even saw your tractor.

I am trying to attach the url for a tractor that has what I have seen reported to be what the hood could receive as the original type muffler for a "B".

Now I'm not trying to play Correct Police, it's just that even though your tractor might have come to you with that style muffler, it wasn't originally designed for that style.

The muffler for the styled "B" was about 3" for the first maybe 12-15", and then coned immedialtely to about 1 1/4 or so for another 6/8 inches.

Now I am by no means a "B" expert, and I will defer to those who are, but if you want to use that muffler, you're going to have to open up the hole in the hood patch.

Thank you! Yes I know it's not what originally came on my B but it was what was sold, and my budget is now shot. I may have to look for an original style muffler then.

Thanks,

Karl

~Karl, I was going to stay out of this one as it is getting kind of big & you were getting good advice. But thought I might give you more data to help you decide which way to go.
~The sound that you get from that after-market muffler will not be the same or as pleasing as the original Deere design. ~You can tell the sound difference from a long way off.

Interesting point. Any idea how much these things run? I don't want to be out a whole heck of a lot of money for a new muffler, heck a new distributer cap from deere cost me $60 and that was just a small piece of plastic pretty much!

Thanks,

Karl

~Karl, you might try Deere, I took a quick look at K&K, Farm Power & Detwiler & didn't see any listed. I hope Deere still carries them. ~I haven't bought a muffler for a "B" in a few years (I bought 10 originals about 10 years ago & only have one left, so I'm going to have to keep my eyes open for more)
~It will pay to shop around, I needed a short muffler for an unstyled "A" last summer & found over $30.00 difference between the high & low for the same repo original style muffler. ~If you find one post where & how much.

The picture you show is a replacement muffler but not a John Deere muffler. John Deere mufflers have no flanges, are not necked down at the bottom, and are the same diameter top to bottom. Also John Deere hoods of any model, A,B,G only have holes and no Patches. If it has a patch then someone originally cut a hole in the hood and later installed patch kit. Russ

Thank you for restating what I said before, yes the muffler wasn't made by John Deere, and yes the patch kit was later installed as stated.

Thanks,

Karl

Russ,

You're absolutely right! When I got a new muffler for my '41 B it had Nelson embossed on it. I had a buddy that worked for Nelson Muffler, of Stoughton, Wisconsin, as a draftsman back in the '50s. It's good to see that they're still around (at least as of 8 or 9 years ago).

Karl,
You say you spent a lot of time fixing the hole in the hood??? Maybe you fixed it too long and closed the hole up too much???? Therefore, the new muffler won't go through the hole. Measure the hole in another hood and compare it to yours. Good luck, and please post what you do to correct the problem.

Karl,

I understand your problem. You know that the hole in your hood did not shrink, so the new muffler must be the wrong size. The diameter on my B muffler is about 3 1/8". Maybe some one gave you the wrong muffler? Good Luck.

It's the same muffler as what was on before and apparently it is sold as the replacement muffler, as stated before the old one had some mods done to it, of which I really don't want to do unless I have to.

Thanks,

Karl

My '49 B muffler is about 3 1/8" also. What's the diameter on your new one? My hood has a couple of sheet metal plates screwed to the hood to close the gap between the muffler and the hood. They look a little too good for a mechanic to cut without a punch press, I think they are factory. I doubt most farmers would have spent time with that aesthetic stuff like us here on the board.

Remove Steering wheel and shaft,Disconnect linkages, remove hood with gas tank, Install muffler, and re-assemble. This is one of the not neat things when John Deere went to styled hoods. Russ

A standard John Deere muffler is bolted to the radiator housing with 4 bolts, then 2 people one on each end of the hood/gastank lift the hood above the top of the muffler and lower it thru the hole in the hood. If it will not go thru the hood then the hole is the wrong size. Russ

It was the recommended replacement muffler by John Deere, same as the old one.

Karl,

Well, I hope somebody else comes up with a better way than this, but you'll need to remove the steering wheel, take the medallion off the front end of the hood, turn the steering rod until it comes free of the worm gear and slide the steering rod out.

Then you'll have to remove the hood, at least the front end, and put the new muffler on. You may have to remove the whole hood to get enough room to put the new muffler through the hole and get it bolted down.

Good luck,

Stan
