my B is a bare back can i use a # 5 mower? obviously I won't be able to lift it over obstructions with rock shafts (mainly because there arn't any but is there a #5 with a armstrong lift(lever) that I could use?

secondly is the cover on a bare back as easy to remove as it looks? can I just unbolt it and replace the gasket and seal (oil leaks are sort of stoped by a thick "oil gasket") around the P.T.O and refill with oil or is it more compilcated than that? (probably) thanks

Yes, pulling the back cover is as simple as it looks - Just remove the cap screws and she'll come right off. If you have a leak, replace the cover gasket, using a smitch of High-Tack to keep the gasket in place and get two 3" cap screws to fit the mounting bolt holes (heads removed) to use as dowels while setting the cover on. That way, you won't move the gasket and you'll have the extra hand you may need when re-aligning the PTO coupler. Don't be afraid to replace the PTO seal as well, especially if you are planning to use the PTO.

If you ever wanted power-lift (preferably power-trol), just find a usable rear cover with the valve box & pump, put in the new gaskets/leathers/seals & you're in business. It's that easy.

The NO. 5 mowers were equiped either with hyd. lift, or manual lift using a foot lift mounted on the left axle housing. I grew up mowing with the manual system and it works good. You will just need to adjust the spring accordingly.

Boy, does your post bring back memories. I don't know how much hay I mowed with a B and a foot lift #5 mower. Bet my left leg was stronger than my right.

Hey, I sold one a little while back that was hydro. the man was talking about putting a manual lift on it. I assumed it was a hand lift. Thanks for setting me straight on that. Jonathan

Hey, a #5 came both ways hand lift and with a hydro. cyl. that worked off the powr-trol. It's no problem to put a hand lift were the cyl. is. If you can find one. And yes I believe pulling the cover is as easy as it looks. Jonathan (JJK Tractor Salvage)
