I got a fellow wanting to sell a rusted 1944 JD LA. Been sitting in a field for years. the motor is loose but the stick shift is frozen. It's an electric start. The generator has been removed. It also looks like the gas tank has had water in it and is rusted through! Needs a LOT of work. At what point in price will I reach the TOO MUCH point? While he's trying to decide what he wants to sell it for. I'm trying to decide what to give for it! signed, NEWBY

I've been working off and on for three years on one like you described. On mine the rear end appears to be in good shape. The motor was stuck, tires all rotton, and rear rims rusted out. I paid $600 for it and have another $1000 in it not counting the motor. I hope the motor will be done next week and I'll get the news then how much. It won't be cheap. The mechanic had to turn the crank, replace the bearings, get the rods re-babbited, replace the timing gear and the cam shaft, and find replacement valves that will fit when cut down from an auto shop. He is sleeving it with oversize pistons. By the time I saw how bad the motor was, I was too far in to quit. Besides it is a very early one, and deserves to be fixed. I don't plan to sell it, which is good since I will have more in it than it is worth. If you get it and decide to part it out, let me know. I still have a few more parts I need. I can also put you in touch with some parts suppliers if you decide to restore it. Bottom line is, expect to spend a lot.

The tractor IS worth something. Just the engine and other parts have some value alone. From the way you describe it, I wouldn't give him more than $100 - $150. If you're planning to restore it, you'll spend far more on the restoration than you would buying one that's already done and looking perfect. If you like doing the work and don't mind spending the money, go for it. Personally, I wouldn't touch it. There's much better LA's out there for the money.

If you got it given to you it would be to high.
Their not worth that much restored, around 3500.
You could probably sell it for a parts tractor,
but it sounds like the owner may think it's
valuable.
