Is there any fuel additive that is readily available that can be used to add to todays fuels to make a 2-cylinder John Deere run better? Are Lead additives of any benefit? Thanks.

AWB,
I HAVE A JD420W, MY OWNERS MANUAL CALLS FOR A MIN OF 86 OCTANE, I USE 87 FROM THE PUMP NON ALC. SEEING HOW MINE IS ORIGINAL "NON HARDEN VALVES", I USE THE FOLLOWING FORMULA: PURCHASE A 5 GAL GAS CAN FOR MIXING. 87 OCTANE 5 GAL. LEAD ADDITIVE "CD2" 2 OZ PER 5 GAL OF FUEL (PURCHASED FROM WALLMART FOR OFF ROAD USE) AND OF COURSE "MARVEL MISTERY OIL" KEEPS CARB CLEAN AND LUBES TOP END, 1 OZ PER 5 GAL OF FUEL. SHE STARTS FIRST LICK EVERY TIME, AND PULLS LIKE A SON OF A BEE.

AWB, not really/well maybe. In a properly tuned 2-cylinder with good compression there isn't anything that will make it run better. In a worn out 2-cylinder with worn rings & low compression the addition of some 2-cycle oil in each tank of gasoline can improve the compression, especially during low or cranking RPM's. The use of plain standard gasoline without alcohol will help the starting as the alcohol content in gasoline can vary depending how long the mixture sits. The higher the content of alcohol the more compression it requires & the harder it ignites in a low compression engine. Lead additives are not absolutely required & probably shouldn't be used in a non-working tractor, they aren't even a must in a working tractor but will help prevent valve to seat recession in a hard working engine without hardened valves & seats.
