What would cause the bearing retainer on the bevel gear pto shaft under the first reduction gear cover to shatter (behind the gear that the pto shifter moves)? The bolts were tight against the retainer, it broke off next to them. The bearing seems to be/looks very good, and so does the bushing.

Also, ever since I can remember, several years, the pto clutch pedal would never stay ahead without keeping your foot on it, as soon as you take it off, the pto quits and also when you push it down to shut it off, it doesn't lock down, pto turns slightly. Do I need to remove the pto clutch?

One more thing, what kind of oil should be in the transmission case? It appears to have had something like 90 weight gear oil in it. I know it's always been gear oil, my father always used the same thing, but I wondered if there is a better choice, the tractor gets used a lot on a double 7' sickle mower, summer use only. Also would synthetics be a better/recommended choice for the tractor.

Thanks.

mowing machines and bushogs are really rough on these pto due to the tourque of the 2 cylinder. I believe the thurst of the shaft hammered against the retainer. You probably had to much end play. I have a 530 and when running the sickle mower keep the engine reved up. At low speed you can hear the rapping caused by the torque. I use the older gear oil 140 in mine, think the 90w is too thin. Good luck on repairs.
