2510 alternator

I just bought my first green tractor, a 1966 2510 deisel with narrow front end, and I am having a charging problem. I took the alternator off to get it tested and the technician said that it would cost more to rebuild it than to get a new one. Does anyone know where I can get a replacement for a resonable price. I probably don't want to check with my John Deere dealer. I got this information off of the generator, but I don't know what it means because the stamped letters and numbers are all that I can see since the print has been faded and had some overspray on it:
12 RA12NJD453
N 3669
35 AR-38458

The voltage regulator ( I guess that that is what it is, the little black box on the back) has the following information:
12 volt, Model R3JD1, Serial # 4293 AR 38459

The original equipment Motorola alternator is far superior quality than any Delco is and as always if you want quality it usually cost a little more. Before I would cob anything else on it I would either fix or replace what the tractor came with. Parts are readily available for your original alternator. Either take it to a shop capable of fixing it or fix it yourself. They really are not that hard to work on. A Delco is all right but does not compare to the Motorola in life and durability. To prove this look on most older combines that run in extreme dirt and heat conditions I will guarantee you that you will not find to many Delco's as original equipment. The Delco will not take the dirt and heat will destroy them. Not saying that a Delco won't work in your case but if you want the best of options just fix what you have and keep it original. My two cents worth for what it is worth. Dave W.

for $60.00 you can buy a one wire delco alt. and switch it.

John Deere rebuilts aren't that bad. That's a Motorola and I doubt you will find one other than a dealer. Thats a 35 amp if memory serves. I think you can convert to Delco by getting an adapter wireing harness that deere had to do this. I can get the no. of the adapter if you need it. The regulator was the weak point on this tractor . Check the wire's at the connector to see if it might be broken. Hope this helps Don
