JD 70 water temp?

My 70 makes a gurgling noise in the cooling area after I have ran it for awhile. The temp gage was broke so I put in a new one to make sure it was not getting too hot. I ran it for 45 minutes or so and the temp gage did not move off the 140 mark, but it still gurgled when I shut it down. Is this common or ???? Thanks, Ken

Ken, can you tell exactly where (engine, radiator, pipes etc.) the gurgling is coming from? Also do you have the early or late thermostat/water outlet plumbing? (early = thermostat at cylinder water outlet. Late = thermostat at radiator inlet, the late also has a little bypass pipe running from the cylinder water outlet to the thermostat). There are some possibilities;
(1) it is normal?, (2) the thermostat is stuck partially open, (3) the water pump seal is allowing the pump to suck air, (4) the cooling system has a large amount of scale & crud in it, (5) the radiator is partially plugged, (6) the head gasket is leaking (7) something else.... make sure the radiator is full then look for air bubbling back into it after shutdown, if so suspect a water pump seal, does it gurgle if shutdown after only a few minutes of run or only after it gets hot & has run for a while? My 70 gas has the early thermostat system & doesn't gurgle (at least that I have noticed) when shut down, but does take a long time to get above 140* if I don't work it, but will eventually will get hot enough to move the temp gauge needle & open the thermostat.

Our 1954 70 takes awhile to get above 140 unless we really make it work. It's got a new radiator core, thermostat and a rebuilt water pump. When it fianlly gets up to temp, unless we are REALLY working it and it's mid-summer, the temp will go up to about 200, then settle back to around 170 and continue to do this as long as we are working it. My $.02.

On your 70's,do your brakes choke the engine relativly easy or does it lug down and keep going?I have a IH buddy that came over last night and wanted to drive my 56 70 because he knew I had been working on it.He got on the brakes in second gear and when he got back he said it went down fast.I told him that MY BRAKES actually work like they are supposed to.I can't wait to get on his 400 F$#%&^* and tell him what I think.See ya fellas,Jack(TN).

Jack, I've not tried to stall my 70 with the brakes in 2nd gear but doubt they would if it was running a fast idle. I can shut my B down pretty good with the brakes in second gear though. I always use my tractor hauling trailer with a load on it, it has 4 wheel electric brakes then use a manual brake controller & use it as a dyno load. That trailer with about 7,000 lbs on it can really put a load on a tractor when the brakes are applied. Put a little run time on your 70 then adjust the load needle a little richer & see if it pulls better. It might not hurt to clean the air cleaner canister wire mesh & snorkel & set the ign timing either. Those 70's also have a pretty high 2nd gear that is about like 3rd on other tractors.

140F is the minimum temp indicated on the gauge & the needle doesn't move? What does the temp gauge indicate with the temp probe immersed in boiling water as a test refernce? Assuming an elevation of less than 1000ft for approx 212F. Operating temp for fuel efficiency, longer service life, less air pollution & more power is 180F minimum for a gas or diesel.

Ken: I am not sure exactly what you are hearing, but I had a 70D and have a 730D. Both produce a gurling sound at shut down which comes from the oil in the oil bath air clearer. It could be you are hearing that and as that noise is near the radiator one could assume it has something to do with the cooling system. It only gurles for a very short time, but maybe you can tell us more about the noise you are hearing which would help someone here identify the souce.

Ken, Ours runs pretty cool unless ya lug her pretty good. I would not be concerned with that, but the gurgling bothers me. Ours was a basket case when we bought it, but the guy we bought it from said it gurgled when shut off, that's why he tore it down. We found that the head was cracked and letting compression into the coolant. Have you ever seen any vapor come out the exhaust?I'd definately check with Clooney though! Good luck, Pete

Ken: As far as the temp gauge, I gotta really pull my '53 down to get the gauge over over 140.
She's always ran cool. The gurgling noise, you better ask Clooney 'cause I think you may have something going on there. Notice anything at the radiator fill neck with the pressure cap off ??
