I have a 1941 JD H. It is equiped with a radiator shutter system. I recently aqured a set of shutters but have several questions. Firstly, which way do the shutters mount? horizontally or vertically? Secondly, the shutters I have appear to operate in a push pull maner. How is this action converted to the twisting action that is required to use the knob on my dash? Do I have the wrong shutters? Or am I just missing some linkage? Thanks for your help everyone

Clooney is right again, as usual.

One product I've found to be better than WD-40 is Fabulous Blaster - can usually be found near WD-40 in auto parts stores.

I have an H and the shutters are stuck open. I can't even unmount them. Should I even worry about them? I have heard that their reason was to get the motor to heat and/or cool better in the field. I don't plan on using the tractor for work. Should I just leave them alone. If not do you know if it is possible to get them freed up? I would appreciat any help you can give me. Thanks.

It depends on how bad they are rusted & where the hang-up is. You might try soaking all the linkage & vane pivots with penetrating oil & keep applying it & working the knob to see if it will free up. Because it is a thermo-siphon system it will heat up pretty good even without shutters, they were used for very cold weather & to keep the temp up for burning kerosene & heavier fuels.

When I got my H, the shutters were stuck open too. If you can get them off of the tractor, you'll have to work on each of the shutters and top and bottom hinges separately. I got my unstuck after a lot of time, patience, WD-40 soaking, and gentle manuevering. Be patient and you'll get them open. Good luck.

Joe, the shutters mount vertically. The twist knob is converted to a fore-aft motion with a threaded rod & a lever under the hood. Picture should be in your E-Mail, my online server is down so I can't post it here.
