Noise when clutch is not engaged

I have a late styled A - John Deere and when the clutch is not engaged there is a lot of noise and I am not sure if it is in the clutch or transmission. However if the clutch is engaged whether in gear or out of gear it is quiet, and it seems to pull fine, just very noisy. Anyone know what it might be and the solution.

Check for a loose flywheel; we did that on our 70 last month per Clooney's advice and that was the problem. Sounds like you have the same situation.

The first place I would look is at the roller bearing inside the clutch pulley that the carries the pulley on the crankshaft. When the clutch is engaged this bearing is not under any load or use, it is rotating with the crankshaft and pulley as one part. When the clutch is disengaged the crankshaft is rotating inside this bearing with the pulley setting stationary around it. The only way this bearing gets any lubrication is when the pulley is removed from the tractor it has to be packed with grease just like you would pack a wheel bearing. This is a very common over looked maintenance area and you most likely will find it needs service and possibly replacement. If you want to isolate the possibilities more yet remove the clutch pulley and reinstall the clutch driver hub aligning timing marks and run the engine with the pulley removed and see if your noise is gone. Kenny, as Jerry said check the flywheel for loose bolts or movement, if all ok there then pull the clutch pulley cover & see if there is a broken adjusting bolt or the driver is loose on the crankshaft. If it is just a light rattling noise it could be some non-terminal wear on the clutch driver & disks, if it is a heavy knocking noise it should be found & addressed pronto. Try to explain the noise in detail?

About the first thing I would look at is the flywheel and see if it is trying to loosen itself away from the main case. That would cause such a situation. If it isn't that, there are a host of other things to look at.
