Can anyone tell me what the holes (two on the rear side and four on the front side)of the rear axle housing were for? And also are they all the same size and spacing apart on all of the two cyl. row crop tractors? THANKS FOR ANY INPUT!!!!! !!

Willy,

Can you tell us what model and year tractor you have? I found that the studs used in these holes for attaching implements are 5/8" X 2-1/4" (for a Model B). According to my parts catalog, they are part number A 5292 which subs for C1479R - 12 used.

The nut is called a "Special Hex Nut" and is part number A 1892R, which subs for AA4963R. It is a 1-1/4" deep nut with the outer end chamfered on each side at about a 45 degree angle - also 12 used. These will run about $5 each.

I'm not sure if these would be the same for other row crop models, but I suspect they might be. As for the spacing, the cultivators that bolted onto the rear axle had brackets that slid to acommodate attaching to different tractors.

Those holes were for studs and hex nuts to hold the brackets for cultivators. They may have had other uses, but that's the one I remember.

The ones in front were for mounting the depth adjusting levers and the ones in back were to mount the rear "scratcher" cultivators.

Other things that mounted to these axles were loader brackets, foot clutch for a #5 mower, and some mounting assemblys for a hay stacker.

While on the subject of the holes, I have a couple that are stripped out, the bolt goes in but will not tighten and hold, kinda scary when you step on the foot clutch of the #5 mower. Question is what do you recommend as a permanent and safe fix? Do they make heli coils that big? Are the bolt threads slightly different from regular. Thanks for any help.

Ed, yes you can get helicoils that big and bigger. I use 2 in each hole as I dont think one is enough threads in cast. The studs have a flat thread that goes in the cast, this helps lock it and is stronger ,the other end is regular bolt thread. The bolts were used to mount corn pickers ,culitavators ,loaders and a number of other attachments. Don

Eddie,

I can't help with your problem, but I have a question - hope you don't mind. You and Jerry have both mentioned a "foot clutch" on a No. 5 mower. We had a No. 5 mower and used it on both a '49 A and a '52 B and I can't remember what that foot clutch would have been. Are you talking about the lift pedal on mowers that did not have a remote hydraulic cylinder?

Thanks,

Stan

Stan, that is what I am refering to, it bolts to the left axle housing and rather than raising and lowering the cutter bar by the lever on the mower itself, you just step on the foot pedal. It will raise the cutter over obstacles but then it will go back down without having to release the latch on the handle. All you need is three feet, four hands and eight eyeballs to work everything.

Eddie,

I thought that was the one you were talking about. Do you have one of those mowers with the foot-pedal lift? If so, please contact me by e-mail.

Thanks,

Stan
