I have a 56 70 Gas tractor. It has good compression, runs good at an idle, everyting seems fine. When it is pulled, the tractor seems to have no lug, and black smokes as if too much fuel, and even knocks a little. The timing is O.K., and it does'nt seem to getting too much fuel riding around or when I mow with it. Any suggestions?

CHECK THE CHOKE PLATES ,THEY WILL COME LOOSE AND FALL DOWN ,THEN WHEN THE GOVERNER CALLS FOR MORE SPEED OR POWER THEY WILL SUCK UP AND CHOKE THAT SIDE OFF, CAUSEING BLACK SMOKE AND NO POWER,AND THE ENGINE TO KNOCK AS WELL.

I'd go with Clooney . Also check the oil cup at the breather to make sure you're not sucking up oil into the air mixture. Too much, or the wrong weight oil could give you the same symptoms under load. Learned one thing about my '53- she likes a little more plug gap than book spec. Comes up faster cold (2 rev's) and runs smoother under load. pb

Clooney has a good point and you can take the four 9/16 bolts out of the j piece going from your carb up to the filter loose and flip it over.I unhooked my breather and it made a conciderable difference.

Well hello there Mr Taylor.I got it all put back together and it really runs different and even sounds different,(I guess a more even thump)but I have not plugged it up to the trusty ole pto shaft on the dyno yet.The new electronic ignition has been back ordered(positive ground)and should be here this week, hopefully.I am trying to cover all my bases before I try it one more time. You know that 70 pulled fairly well with a jet missing and an exaust valve spring broke. It always ran good to me but thanks to the dyno I went looking for power robbing problems and found some and was able to get them repaired.Got my fingers crossed this time. Thanks for asking MrT. Nothing like a dyno vs using the seat of the pants for tuning.Who would have guessed those two gremlins existed while watching it pull last summer? That 70 is going to out HP a stock 720 pretty soon. Found some suprises in our 80 using the dyno as well. Fortunately the "completely restored/rebuilt" tractor only required re-built injectors.

I have always wanted to jump on one of those bad boys and pull it in the 10,000 class.I know of an 80 close but the guy will not sell it.Several R's around though and they are not selling too good in my area. The G's and late A's go like hotcakes.I am going to play with my fuel mixture and see what ole Betsy likes the best.I bought some C12 fuel last Sat and if it don't move out of its tracks,it sure smells good running. What size rubber on the 80?

Just a set of 18.4x34 Goodyears 45 degree treads on the 80. Pulled once on a clay power track in the 10,000lb class with the creeper 1st gear. Hardly made it work but the full length drawbar levered the front wheels up at 2/3's of the way down the track but placed 3rd. Later 4th in the 12,000lb class even though it still only weighed 10,000lbs. Have a spare "cutter" short drawbar now but my father the owner doesn't want his tractor "wrecked by pulling the sled". Doesn't stop him from taking tractors from the collection & yanking/spinning to pull logs out of the bush however?Plus we've had several tractors vandalized on two occasions at the local show/pull in Blyth Ontario. Yet he gives me h*ll for wasting money building up my own 20 series two cylinder collection. Says I can use any of his any time I want? I'm puzzled at the popularity of the A,B & G when for the same money a numbered series can be purchased & restored? Plus having a water pump, ditributer ignition, live hydraulics, optional diesel & avalable live pto/power steering. They even sound the same. Our shows up here consist mainly of numbered series with rollomatic or standard gas tractors & standard chassis diesels. Rowcrop diesels,LP & numbered series all fuel are uncommon to rare.

Jon, try it with the air cleaner disconnected as the wire mesh or intake snorkel in the air cleaner tends to plug with dirt & oil residue & restrict air flow at high throttle openings. If that doesn't help suspect a coil or metering problem.
