Had a pond dug this last fall by a Cat dozer. My question is would one of the Dubuque dozers 40C, 420C, 430C, or even an MC due this kind of work. I see them for sale often but I have no experience with one. The next pond project I'd like to do it myself. Also, I'd like to stay two-cylinder.

It would take 3 or 4 times longer to dig than any modern small dozer. These little machines just aren't that powerful, I have an Allis HD-5 and it seems incredibly slow compared to the D-3. It does do a great job clearing brush and utility work, but I don't really want to push those 50 year old parts too hard, such as when pushing dirt.

Your HD-5 has the same Jimmy Diesel as our old JD 440 which probably somewhat more motor than a 420 or 430 gas would have.

Mine has the 2-71 Jimmy, real peppy for its size, I never run out of power usually traction. Also it ain't never leaked a drop of oil,Great little motor.

My mistake, I just assumed that they were both 2-53s. Before Dad bought his first hi lift, he had a very good friend that came over with a 5 just like yours and did work for us. He also had a HD-11 dozer. I don't know what kind of motor that one had.

It is probably possible, back in the late 40's we built a 1/2 acre pond with a B John Deere, Plow, and rollover scraper. The problem being you do not get the bank compaction, and ability to line the bank with Clay to prevent leaks. If you have the time it could probably be done. Russ

The first crawler my dad owned was a 440 hi lift with the 2-53 Detroit Diesel. I think size wise it compares the 40, 420s, etc. If you have enough time and conditions are right, you can tackle alot of different jobs with a machine that size but I don't think they in any way compares with anything that that Caterpillar has made in the last forty years. The 450s Bs & Cs that they made in the late sixties and through the seventies were nice machines but it's been a long time since I've seen one in good shape and even those don't compare size wise to Cat's smaller machines.HJ

A couple of things to think about....Compare it to the check book. If you have to hire a big cat, your are paying big bucks per hour. With a little two cylinder, you will get the job done in a longer time frame, but the check book stays in your pocket. PLUS YOU HAVE THE FUN!!!!! The ops book on a 430 lists the push or pull at 4500#. There were only 2287 430C built. there were more 440C built. The 40C was rated at 20 drawbar H.P., 25 at the belt. The 430 and 440 Gas was rated at 24 Drawbar H.P . and 30 H/P. at the belt. The last 440 had a differant carb, and the R.P.M.'s where increasted and it was retested at NEB and re-rated at 35 H.P. The last 440IC were rated at 6500# push or pull. I would stay away from the 440C diesels as engine parts ars harder to come by. If you go for it, get a ops manual, parts book, and a tect manual from J.D.
