The 830 I just sold and the 730 I just purchased both had brass tags. Its just the material of choice at the time and doesnt mean a hill of beans but you are not the first to ask the question and it makes for good conversation.

Brass tags were on the earliest Deeres, then if I'm not mistaken re-appeared back somewhere in the first numbered series. The reason I don't know, but I have A 26' D with it, several others in the mid 30's and 40's without it and a 56' 70 with it. Clooney will know

I don't know the date that Deere changed to aluminum tags. But the first material used was brass. All those people that advertise that they have a 1935 B or a 1930 D with brass tag. Woopie! ALL 1935 B's and 1930 D's have brass tags. It is just a way of making them and you think that they have something special. They Don't! The people with tractors for sale think they can get more money if they advertise that way.

The brass serial number tags were applied to the early models of John Deere equipment. It was their material of choice until they switched to aluminum serial number tags. If you have a tractor with a brass serial number tag, you've got a very old tractor.
