Hello,
my 830 pony start motor has no good coils and bad 6-v generator and battery.is it better to convert it now to an 12v.system and put 12v.coils in it and a 12v generator. Can i keep the starter or does it also be rebuilt to 12v?
and what about fuel gauge?
I know that bulbs must be replaced but is there something else i forget?

2) what is valve clearance of the pony motor?

3) I have a JD70D where pony motor has a leak of power, how can i adjust the carb? al the rest seems to be ok.

Thanks for your reply.

luc

Luc,
I converted my 730d & 70d. to 12v. I use a $15 lawn mower Battery, a GM alternator, and as for coils,I use 1, 4pack coil and wires off of a 8cyl Ford electronic ign.(from junk yard.) (Ford uses 2, 4wire coils)the coil package fits neatly under the air cleaner on top of the tappet cover on the pony motor. It looks like they were "factory" installed I use the origional points. the fuel gauge sender took some doing on the 730 as it was a positive ground and I had to insulate it. I also converted my "70"D the same way,but the"70" fuel gauge sender needed no modification other than to change polarity AND you MUST use a dropping resistor on Both the gauges,You need only a small battery. these tractors are working tractors and were converted about 3-4 years ago. the spark is much hotter. and I can use 12v.accesories,Monitor for planter, and radio

George, that seems like the sensible way to make that conversion. I have seen a few in my area that were done the same way only using a late model G.M. 4 cylinder coil pack system & about the same mounting, if done with care it looks & works good.

New coils are only $55 each & even better package deals for the entire "distributer" new. Looks better than that four coil mess often seen cobbled under the hood & held in there with baler twine. Just don't forget & leave the pup ignition on without the engine running. Or you'll smoke the coils in a minute or two if the points are closed.

Not being critical of other peoples advise, but DO NOT put 8 volts to those coils. It might not do it the first time but it will shorten the life of those HIGH DOLLAR PIECES.

I had the same problem with my 730. First start by checking the coils to see if they are clean of rust, etc. They will only fire if they are clean. mechanics sandpaper/emory paper will do. Then install new points, condensors, plugs and PLUG WIRES(important). That engine runs excellent on 6 volts and that way you do not have to modify anything.

Keeping it correct as possible keeps the correct police off your back.

E mail me if you have any problems.....

Ya. I forgot that the coils wont like the 8 volts. Good point. Don't do it.

You might think about using an 8 volt battery. Then you don't have to change the starter. The 8 volt should solve your power problem. Can't help on the settings.

You will have to have the generator turned up to charge the 8 volt. But as the generator is shot already. He can have one set up.
