I have a 42 A that I am redoing the engine on. It had set outside for a good while and was stuck when I got it, so I did not get a chance to hear it run. Is it likely that the cam and cam bearings need re-doing while the engine is apart or are they generally long lasting. Thanks for any ideas. Tony

Cam wear is not likely, but bearings might be bad from water or rust. I have seen quite a few with significant wear on the bearing that holds the oil pump drive shaft & gear to the camshft so I'd check that out. I have been told that Deere cams varied quite a bit and some of th e reground ones will allow a little smoother idle, but I don't know that for a fact.
Good Luck,
Paul

Tony I just pulled mine out of a 38 D and it is more hex shaped with flat topped lobs, really see why it run the way it did now. Feel the cam lobs to see if they are smooth or washboarded like most I've checked, depends on how many hours the tracor has run. Seems most old D's had to earn there way many times over. Robert's Carb, ([email protected]), Ph-712-262-5311, can have it ground, mine run about 100.00 and 7.00 shipping. Looks good but havn't got it together yet to see the diff.
If you have the cam ground be sure to send the 4 followers to. Best of Luck to all.
Bob-Wyo.
