Geoff: For years our 70D pony did not start or run right. I always thought it was the carb, but my dad didn't trust me to go into into it. Now that I have the tractor down in Florida, the first thing I did was re-build the distributor (need a good hot spark), and then I opened the carb to find that the load screw was corroded into it's jet. Also there was significant crud and flakey debris in the bowl. We also never used the fuel shut-off lever on the dash as it was bound tight. So, I got a kit from Roberts ($35) and warmed and freed up the load needle and jet, and lapped them together just a little to clean them. Renewed all other gaskets and ran a wire through all ports. ALso freed the fuel shut-off valve. That engine fired up the first turn ! I let it warm, then tuned it a bit, and set the timing with a light (there is no advance). Then I shut it off according to the procedure in the book, which is to close the shut-off valve and let the engine run itself out of fuel. Otherwise, when the tractor is running and bouncing and vibrating, the float can bobble up and down, and drain the bowl into the pony Infact, drain the entire contents of the tank into the pony !). This engine will now start hot or cold everytime. My older brothers came down to vist and said they didn't know it could run that well. It will spin the diesel on full compression non-stop as long as you want it to. Now, what does your do ? Does it run well cold ? Do the carb adjustments have any effect ?Does it stop as it warms up ? Does it just not start after you have been running the diesel at temperature for a while ? Do you think it's lack of spark or gas ? Maybe the spark is too weak when warm. Does it seem flooded ? If you wait until tomorrow does it start ? And finally, do you have a book ? Let us know, because there are a whole bunch of folks on this and other boards who can really help.
